OK, folks, I did the math so you don't have to - albeit completely unofficial. Field was noticeably smaller, but that aside the 4 division winners all brought their A games. This is what I've got so far:

Global League Semifinal:
The Hit Squad, Part II - 87.7551
Flashers - 76.530625

World League Semifinal:
nil - 87.2449
Wild Things - 76.5306

If you'll look at the scores across leagues, had things been arranged differently the two highest scoring teams are separated by only 0.5 points after the first challenge, and the other two by 0.000025 points!! I suspect that's simply a factor of rounding to 4 decimal places and it's even closer than that.

Amazing shots from all four teams.

(Edit - that title should say "Brung It")

Just wait to see what Wild Things have in store in portraits - Team nil shouldn't think they are home and dry just yet ;¬P

Finally - trash talk!!

And believe me, I know the folks from Flashers all too well to be comfortable with our Landscape scores alone with a Portrait challenge looming. There's no false bravado going on with our team. I will say I feel better knowing it's not team nil that has to make up the ground on us.

Unfortunately the good natured ribbing and talk about DPL that happened during DPL3 was utterly missing this year. A couple posts about particularly close matches after the fact, and about how to make the season more interesting and perhaps longer, but not much else. Kind of a shame but it falls in line with how participation was here beforehand. When not compelled to submit because of the league folks don't. I suspect fully half the submissions in the Landscape and Portrait challenges are by the 28 members on the 4 playoff teams. Less than 50 portraits submitted. After next week I suspect crickets will be the norm.

Maybe a year-round league needs to be the norm. Perhaps not all head to head, one challenge a week (the open one?) that would run for half the year, seeding teams into a round robin... just something to keep people involved?

One of the biggest problems that need to be solved, is that people were talking in their own threads, but not in the main program threads. It's the camaraderie that I like and the reason that I stopped entering for awhile. My group had gone quiet, no one was talking. It's the friendships and info that keep me here. So if anyone is interested in continuing a small group afterwards, let me know. I'd love to stay around.

Plus -- we just had the landscape challenge so that Nil could feel a part of things before we crushed them! So take your big rocks and get ready to throw yourselves off of them, Nil!

Thanks for doing the math. Looks like all four teams proved they deserve to be in the playoffs ... very well done.

As for trash talk ... I was planning to be a big talker this season, but then we started doing well and I didn't want to jinx it.

I can say my team has entered some solid portraits :)

I notice that the team with the 2nd highest overall average didn't make the playoffs.

Yup. And they should have. There should definitely be wild card slots in this!

Neither did two teams that lost but had higher averages than the teams that won their divisions. Like any competition on the right day/week anyone can beat anyone if things line up right. That happened to us last year in the playoffs - a team we would have beaten 4 out of 5 weeks in the regular season beat us handily in the first round. That's why you play the games.

Oh, and for the record, as good as the team you mention is/was the team that handed them their only loss would have beaten them any of the 5 weeks during the season, so I'd blame the person that seeded you in that division. ;)

In all seriousness, though, if we want to talk about averages meaning something then I don't think you can do that in a 5 week season (which I agree is too short to make the league truly interesting). If you want to look at averages and consistency then do X weeks where you do not compete against other teams you simply establish a competitive average for the team. Then those average are used to place teams in a bracketed elimination tournament the same way the NCAA basketball tourney is seeded. If we have 24 teams then take the top 15 and let 16 & 17 play a wild card for the last spot. Then it's 1 vs. 16, 2 vs. 15, etc. in 4 rounds of playoffs with half the field eliminated each week (you could run a "losers bracket" as well to keep things interesting).

Or something different along these lines. Regardless it's worth having a discussion if people are really interested in participating - provided that once we figure out something we can agree on we have someone or someway to be able to automate the scoring. Heck, you could even hold a "draft" to create the teams from among players who volunteer to play.

You all did great! Whoever wins didn't get there because they didn't work hard at producing competitive images.

If there is another DPL and we talk math or lotteries, I would like to suggest that somehow the teams are sorted so that it is an equal playing field to begin with, or that handicaps are given.

I do understand that some teams came back to play specifically with other, so there's that to consider. But it would be more fun for all if there were better odds that anyone could win.
