I've been quietly reading all the political rants in the forums for the past several months, and now that election time is nigh, I've decided to post something that some probably find ridiculous to even think about, but for me, and probably for many other women on this site, it's important. Regardless of the political agendas of either side, and the constant bickering, haggling, mud-slinging, and tension, something that I consider as an important piece of the political puzzle is the First Lady. She may well be a "figure head" of sorts, with no power and no real pull in many ways, but her persona...her presence... is representative of the political climate and is a factor in how America is judged by its citizens and by other countries, no matter what you might think. Look at the reputation Jackie Kennedy has... along with many other strong and respectable first ladies in the past.

My point to ponder is this... how would this race turn out if it were Laura Bush vs. Theresa Heinz-Kerry? What are your thoughts? I'm especially interested to see the female point of view on this, for personal curiosity, but anyone is welcome to respond.

Personally, between the two, I'd vote for Laura Bush, who has the grace and poise that should be required of a first lady, along with intelligence, charm, and a good rapport with the public either in person or through the television airwaves. Theresa Heinz-Kerry, on the other hand, appears to me to be more of a loose cannon and just doesn't have the same grace that I have come to expect from first ladies throughout history. Granted, I have much to learn about her, and I'm doing my own research because I would never intentionally badmouth anyone without knowing the facts, but just based on what I have seen thus far my personal choice is Laura Bush.

Any other points of view? :o)

Please remember this is about the two first-lady candidates...please don't bring their male counterparts into this discussion, as there are PLENTY of other threads to flame them in!!! ;o)

I'm with you, Laura for First Lady!

Teresa heinz kerry has her humanitarian and enviromental work behind her and her talent of being accomplished in multiple languages, Luara Bush has what money and power can't get you: manners, poise and an infectious poasitive attitude. On top of that she has a good list of occomplishments along with being a school teacher.

There are lots of good reasons why the media has buried Teresa heinz kerry from the headlines.

I have to say -- I was impressed last week after H-K's slip up about LB's work experience. Mrs. Bush, in the interview I read (CNN perhaps) simply said, something to the effect of "That is okay. She didn't have to apologize. I understand how tough this game is."

Well, that and I am a teacher by trade.

So, I guess another vote for LB.

I think both women are admirable people. I don't, however, believe they should be dragged into the current mudfight. The fact that first ladies are dragged into the spotlight is the reason my wife won't let me run for president :)

I'd vote for you...I think you'd make a good president. Your arguments are well thought out, logical, and well articulated. And you're a photographer to boot! :) That's what we need in the White House...a man with vision...photographic vision. Then the criticism could turn from politics to composition.

You broke Laurie's rule: You're talking about the men behind the women.

Myqyl: Forget about you - what are your wife's qualifications. :)

Unfair comparision. You can't vote for ThK because she's not a natural born US citizen. ;)

My vote would be for Mrs. Heinz-Kerry. I admire her intellect, spontaneity, independence, candor and global vision. I also admire her long record of service to the public good. In MY OPINION, Mrs. Bush represents the female ideal -- especially for a political wife -- of a bygone era.

Theresa is a GEM!! My opinion of her husband went way up when we met her at the convention. I vote for Mrs. Kerry.

Post-Election analysis: With talk of Hilary Rodham Clinton running for president, perhaps we should open this rant to include what could possible be the nation's first "First Gentleman": Bill Clinton!

How would Mr. Clinton stack up against the likes of Jackie-O?
