So I'm going to sink money into the sony 100-400 lens, and they seem to be pretty much price fixed. Yet some places are including free kits.

Adorama is selling the lens and yet selling the lens with a free kit for the same exact price...??

sony lens with multiple filters, including a circular polarizer (77mm)
Sony lens by itself

One place through amazon has an even more extensive kit.

It seems really stupid to not go for the free stuff, but when prices seem to be pretty fixed and they don't go on sale, it makes me leery...

Thoughts?

I wonder if their contract with Sony prohibits them from officially discounting the sale price ... adding "free" stuff may be their way of offering a discount/incentive.

Sometimes, I notice, that they aren't even allowed to tell you the price until you put the item into your cart.

If it's a reputable seller... Amazon, Adorama... etc... then find your best deal!

I can't wait to see what you do with it, Wendy!

Seems that the only thing of any real (potential) value in the add-on kit is the set of three filters. I looked at Amazon reviews for that filter kit, looking for indications of optical quality. I spotted two reviews where the reviewers stated that they degraded image quality when used with longer lenses. That's what I would expect if the glass is not optically flat, and with three 77mm filters for about $25 USD, well, they are not spending money on high quality glass.
I'd "focus" on buying from a reputable seller that is an authorized distributor. Anything extra you get in the deal is a bonus, and may or may not be worth anything at all.

... which you can find out by listing them on eBay ...
