Just spent last 30 mins setting up for 'Night Shot' between the rains to try and get a shot of the Ikeya Comet when my nice neighbour opposite switched on his security lighting to investigate several blades of grass which had escaped his lawn mower!. This was my last chance at the latest 'challenge' before escaping for several days to York and I wish you all good luck and the 'pox' be upon my good nieghbour.

A comet!?! Now how could anybody compete with that? Thanks neighbor.

Well, maybe my idea could if I could just get a chance in the next couple of nights and get my lighting right. Wouldn't you know it, I got a halfway decent photo and when I checked EXIF info, I discovered I had accidentally turned my date information off. Back to the drawing board.

You guys are tough to compete with. I have 2 questions:
In photoshop 5.0, I have sized my image to the required 480 x 640 but the file size is still over 150 kb. What is the best way to get it to that size without cropping the heck out of it?
Secondly, I have the Mavica without the EXIF data : where do I send my "proof this picture was taken this week" photo?
Thanks!!

Use save for web. You might want to check out this post that just dealt with that issue.

where do I send my "proof this picture was taken this week" photo?

We'll let you know when/how we're going to collect them. Just hang on to it for now! :D

Well what about this, I tried taking night shots of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco from the island in the middle of the bay (Yerba Buena Island, I'm in town for work) so while I'm wondering what shutter speed to use, these two national guards come up with very grim faces and ask what the hell am I doing out there in the middle of the night in the dark? It was really dark and they had just scared the crap out of me by sneaking up on me in the dark, and making me jump with their "military voices" so my story of course seemed really lame at that point, well uhhhh, I'm taking shots for this photo contest, the current challenge is a night shot ... and I decided to take the shot of the bridge ..., the look on their faces was priceless, they're on medium alert, and they're looking for anything suspicious anyway, especially terrorists. Geez, and I just wanted to win the challenge.

It turned out there's still a small portion of the old military base that's still active at the bottom of the island for the coast guard, which I wasn't aware of because of course from up in the hills and the bridge you can't see squat in the dark! They finally just warned me to be careful next time, because it just looks suspicious some guy in the middle of the night taking pictures of the bridge right above a military installation. They took down the URL of the site just in case :-) To top it off, it turned out to be a bad spot for pictures of the bridge anyway!

So it's back to downtown SF to listen to the homeless guys ask me if my camera plays cartoons? (Canon G2 with the swivelling LCD, on a tripod) Oh my dog.

Well, there's always tomorrow night.

You deserve a couple of extra points in the judging for that adventure. It's a shame it didn't work out, it sounded like a beautiful picture.

Oh yeah?

I was just about to complete an hour of shooting pictures of a really nifty, huge dish antenna down in Sunnyvale, CA (about 50 minutes South of poor Mikey), and had taken the last of a little over a dozen photos... when a militairy police officer walks up to me and (very nicely) demands to know what I'm taking photos of, and why. I explained that I was taking them for a weekly Internet digital photography competition and that the current challenge was a Night Shot (the moon looked so nice floating just above the dish...) so he took down all my information (including this website) and made me delete all the pictures off of my camera while he watched. As it turns out the antenna I was so interested in was part of a mysterious militairy installation and even though it's like 10 feet from the road it's totally forbidden to take pictures of it, for the same terrorist-related reasons Mikey gave. He didn't think it would be a good idea for me to submit one, obviously. Five minutes after he let me go, as I was driving away, I kicked myself for not having the presence of mind to ask if I could take a picture of *him*, since he was a pretty decent guy. It's probably too hard to get the Man to stand still for 10 seconds, anyway. :)

I'm starting to wonder if the DP Challenge is going to be regarded as a threat to national security!

At least you didn't have to delete your pictures, even if they weren't to your liking, Mikey!

Must be nice the only outside artificial light source around here is a single sodium vapor (the yellow orange type) street light. Off course there is another at the neighbors--about a mile away and over the hill.

BTW great photos of "the city" can be had from point emeryville on the otherside of the bay bridge. You can include the bay and golden gate bridges as well from there.

Man, ya'll have to go through a lot to get pictures. There is a perfect shot that I would love to take but I would definately get in trouble or get mugged. I want to do a "Midnight in Montgomery" at Hank Williams' grave but the cemetary is in a bad part of town and next door to the police department. They close the cemetary at night so I might get arrested.

I do have another idea that should not get me into any trouble at all. I just hope I can get my camera to work right with my limited knowledge. Does anybody have any advice on the best setting to use on a camera where there is no lighting on the subject but it has streetlights in the background? I have an Olympus C-3000 and it has auto and manual focus along with regular, slow 1 and slow 2 flash. I took a fairly decent picture that I can't use with auto focus and a regular flash. However, I think it could be much better.

Ok short redneck. I am sure you chose the name because it fits. Just keep your Redhawk .44 mag in the camera bag and the bad part of town seems a bit more tame.

Need to borrow mine?

Getting arrested / detained for terrorist acts is an automatic +1 point in DPChallenge... it says so in the rules... somewhere... :)

Hey that cemetary shot sounds interesting. Maybe you could stop by the police station first and ask for permission, you might even get an escort!

Re: Your Olympus C-3000 - I looked up the specs on DPReview.com, you can do quite a lot with that one!

Try these out ... one at a time so you see what they do first:

1. Change your ISO to 400
2. Use your metering options - you've got two but I don't know how they work on your camera
2. Set your white balance so the LCD matches what you see
3. Set your aperture to f2.8
4. Try adjusting your exposure compensation
5. Use a tripod

Your cameras specs are below:

Thanks Mikeys_bistro. That is a lot more than I would have thought to do.

As for the cemetary shot, I've got a 30-30 rifle but that's kind of cumbersome when you are shooting pictures. Besides, I know I won't be able to do it cause my husband is a BIG redneck and very protective of me. In other words, he won't let me. He doesn't have the same appreciation of photography that I do and unless it involves shooting deer (with the 30-30 or the camera) he just wouldn't understand going anywhere out of the way to do it.

Gee Mikeys, do you think you could come to New Mexico and take my picture for me??
03/22/2002 04:37:34 PM · #15
Wow and I felt uncomfortable with a police officer sitting behind me for an hour while I was waiting for the sun to go down at the beach. When I finally got out with the camera he left. No good shot :-( the wind was blowing about a hundred miles and hour, by the time I was done shooting I could not feel my ears it was below 0.....I forgot my hat!
Tonight is clear and calm...So I am off to get that picture!

I'm glad you are trying again Connie. It sounds like a nice picture. So far there are only 17 submissions. With 400 plus members we need more for a good competition. I hope everyone was waiting for the weekend just like me.

I went out tonight and it was freezing. I live in Iceland so that is to be expected! :) I shot 6 pretty nice pictures and it is rather hard to decide which one I'm gonna submit. I have asked my friends and they think I should send the picture I was least happy with. I think I'm gonna sleep on it and submit tomorrow.

Here are some pictures that I would have liked to send but they are not taken this week :(

Blue Lagoon
Backlights
Lights over Reykjavík
Speed

Drewmedia: Thanks for the info on saving in Photoshop and the recently posted info regarding it all. I have read that and it was certainly helpful!! I don't have a Save for the web feature, so what I found is that after I save "as", i Have the option to save my image between 1 and 10, 10 being the best. If I save at 8, the file size is below 150kb! So there you have it - hopefully this will help someone else too.
03/23/2002 01:21:23 AM · #20
If I save at 8, the file size is below 150kb!

Well... yes and no. It really depends on how much detail / dynamic range there is in the image to begin with. You'll find that saving at 8 will give you different file sizes with different images. Bummer, eh?
03/23/2002 04:22:31 PM · #21
I agree. My version lets you drag the little slider and then view the file size. You just keep draging till your under 150K I had some nice night shots also, but they were not this week and not digital. I like the fact that it had to be taken this week.
03/24/2002 03:33:57 PM · #22
I am glad other people have had difficulties with this challenge, I was taking photos of planes at Manchester Airport (UK) for the night shot and was turned away by the police. They were OK about it but it put pay to that idea. So I have ended up submitting a fairly unoriginal shot. That will teach me not to leave it until the last night to take my photo.

Never mind there is always the next challenge. :)
03/24/2002 06:00:54 PM · #23
Sorry, folks. I won't be able to participate in the Night Shot challenge. Just finishing moving, still a couple of days of unpacking and not much time for anything else. I'll be sure to get in on the next one.
