I was told to spice up the forums tonight, so here we go.

Dear sir or ma'am,

If you were the one who voted me a 1 about 10 minutes ago.. what were you thinking? Yah yah.. personal taste, blah blah blah.. get over it. You're the type of person that makes me want to put DPC under government voting surveillance.. so I can SQUISH YOUR HEAD! *squish* *squish*..

My photo is NOT a 1.. it's nowhere *near* a 1..

Darned non-objective hoodlums.

Hey! How about those BoSox?

Seriously, the way I see it... the only people that deserve a 1 are images that combine ALL the following:

a) does not meet the challenge
b) less than 200 pixels on the longest edge
c) seriously out of focus with an unrecognizable subject

if the image does not meet all three of the above, at least give a 2.

What do you think? Of course not.

I've never had a comment from someone admitting to giving me a 1.

then its not me ;)
If I give out a 1, I write a long comment, what's lacking and how to improve if I can think of something at that time

I think one of the most beneficial things a photographer can learn is to accept critique and accpet not everyone in the whole will like your photograph.

Although I didn't vote, I am one of those people who use the whole voting scale so I am also one of those [i]"Darned non-objective hoodlums"[i]

I'm so glad you caught the humor of the entry.

Also, if the one-giver had *given* me critique.. I'd have been deliriously happy... also, it's all in good fun, so be a darned non-objective hoodlum with *pride* man! ;)

If a photo had all three I would vote a 1. However, I would vote 1 if it were A and B or even just A. If just B was the case I would consider skipping it instead, certainly not a 1 just for that reason.

I wouldn't let it get to you. Seems like even the ones that scored in the top places on the communication challenge had a couple ones from a few people out there. Maybe someone just seriously doesn't like your photo for whatever reason. Or maybe something in your photo struck a nerve that they didn't like (while that's not fair, it's possible) -- I always try to abstain from giving lower scores just because I don't 'agree' with the content and try judging the image as a whole instead.

Just my $.02.

What algebraic equation are you using to calculate how people voted?
10/21/2004 08:16:32 AM · #17
I was just wondering the same thing -- I didn't see anywhere that I could see what people have given me thus far.

Maybe someone left a comment and said "1" or something?
10/21/2004 08:21:08 AM · #18
You know, I take all comments with a grain of salt. I always check the profile of the person commenting to see what kind of photos they are taking. I am surprised how many commenters have never even entered a photo.

I also have recieved the exact opposite comments on the same photo. Or one who told me to use fill flash when I did use fill flash. SO, just take it all with a grain of salt.

hmm it was not me

but a little confused if its a current challenge you are in how can you tell if you just got voted a one.

I also hate getting low scoring votes and no comments on why also.

It's quite easy if you keep a track of your vote count and a score.

What you have to do is to multiply previous count by previous score. And then try to add numbers one at the time 1 through 10 to the result. And then divide by the last vote count. If you get the last average result, the number you added previously is what was voted on your photo.

Let's say your score at 172 votes was 5.2093. The score at 173 votes was 5.2197

The math was 172 x 5.2093 = 895.9996
Since the score was higher, I add 895.9996 +7= 902.9996
Then devide by current count 902.9996 / 173 = 5.21965xx

Therefore, last voter gave me 7.

How does this take into account people that change their vote on an additional pass?

It's pretty clear to me that some people, if they don't believe you met the challenge give you a 1.

I think this is worse than people who just give you a 1 because they don't like the photo at all. Mainly because there's a good chance that it's them who haven't looked for the interesting angle on the challenge "you" selected. But also because that removes any scale. Are all pictures that don't meet the challenge equally bad?

Personally, a picture that I don't see meeting the challenge is just on a different scale: 1-5 rather than 3-10 if it meets the challenge.

But there's also voters still voting a lot of 1's to bring down others--I noticed I got three 1's in communication, but only two were in the final score (which moved up about .14 after the exorcism of bad voters). Still I had nine 2's and twenty-four 3's, which per my own scale would be a bit harsh if the photo was "on topic". So I can only conclude they felt it was off topic, and again, they have a flatter voting scale than I do for off-topic items. In the end, it kills your score, but if you submitted something you are proud of, it doesn't matter.

I am beginning to think watching your score hourly (or more), which is an addiction, is not a good idea, though I only partly managed to avoid it last time!

Edit: I forgot to make my main point. I really think there should be two voting scales (at least): Topical and Technical/Aesthetic. Or a checkbox: doesn't meet the challenge.

It doesn't. But logically, since the score increased you can assume that someone may have bumped up their score by 1 and someone else gave 6.
