I currently have the Quantaray 28-90 f3.5-5.6 macro that I bought with my first film SLR. I recently bought the Pentax 50mm 1.8 prime and I love the IQ in comparison so I think I need an upgrade. I was thinking of getting the Tamron 28-75 mm f2.8. Will I notice increased IQ? Is this a good lens? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I don't know much specifics about lenses but I don't think there's any point in comparing the image quality of a prime lens with ANY zoom lens.

I was thinking that too, hefe. On the other hand, surely some zooms are better than others. My own experience is that my old manual focus primes are SO FAR superior to my 2 auto zooms, that I have lost interest in zooms. I'll use what I have, zoomwise, but if I have to spend actual money it won't be for a zoom.

A more practical response to Tumbler is to check out pentaxforums: they have almost everything Pentaxian covered, including other brand lenses for Pentax.

Hi tumbleweed.

As already stated, a prime will destroy a zoom all the time on IQ unless we are talking Hasselblad or Leica zooms compared to cheap primes.

The Tamron you are considering is much better than the Quantray lens you have. For a start it has a constant aperture of f2.8, a constant aperture is one sign of a decent zoom lens. If you dont mind manual focus I can suggest looking at Contax Carl Zeiss zooms that are reasonably priced and offer great quality (you would need an adapter CY/PENT.

Tumbleweed,

As a relatively new member, you may not have yet discovered the rather remarkable database section on DPC members' equipment vs. challenge performance. You can review the members' cumulative track record in challenges with specific cameras or lenses. (accessed from the title bar. Equipment>>Cameras; Lenses; etc.) This database has been instrumental in guiding my lens purchases over the years. As others have said, a quality prime will always be sharper than a good zoom. Although, I concede there may be perceived economy and convenience in a zoom lens.

Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Pentax

In my first years of membership here, I developed a list of heroes. My goal was to somehow develop my photography skills to emulate their level of excellence. It is at least partially true that quality glass contributes to excellent photography. This philosophy helped me develop a wish list of prime lenses... to be acquired as the budget would allow. Some of my heroes have moved on, but the legacy of their performance steered me in the right direction on lens acquisition.

As a sidenote: If you acquire equipment not currently included in the DPC database, a contact with admin and SC (see Help menu) will result in a rather quick and efficient addition of your new gear to the cumulative record.

I used a Tamron 28-75mm for years on Canon crop-sensor bodies, like your Pentax. It's actually an excellent zoom lens for those cameras. As MAK said, a BIG step up from your Quantaray. On full-frame dSLRs, not quite so good, as the corner sharpness is pretty week. But with the crop-sensor cameras, you're only using the middle of the image circle, and the lens is outstanding there. It's great value for the money as these things go :-)
