Change date rules?
I think that we should change the rules on submitting a photo that has to be dated during the week of the contest. Leave the date open for when it was taken as long as it was taken with a digital camera and by the person submitting the image. Also the picture should never have been submitted to any contest. We would be able to submit better pictures for the subject of the week. I take pictures several times during a week and of those times I might get a few good pictures that I feel are excellent too me out of hundreds, that I took that week. The places that I am photographing might not be justified for the contest of the week but will be later on for another contest. I not into still photography, where you can get your props, and take 50 or so pictures to get the right shot. Some of my subjects move and do not cooperate into getting the best shot. I like that for that is a spontaneous picture not something that is posed or in a prop, it is something you try to plan, but don't always happen the way you want. I feel if we had the best pictures for examples, we would improve our photography skills. What difference does a date mean as long is it is the best picture for us to see? I mean we opened up editing and that is not a true picture? Let's get the best images for a subject and improve our photography?

Hi Bob,

The time limit on submissions is intended to level the playing field. Without this rule, people who are new to digital photography would be at a significant disadvantage to those who had considerable libraries of digital photography. In addition, the date requirement helps keep the "challenge" in dpchallenge by encouraging you to come up with fresh ideas and get out and take pictures each and every week.

Definitely the first thing that comes to mind in defense of keeping the time frame limit.

I like the rules as they are. It pushes me to try something new every week.

I think this is the whole intention...

I know, from experience, that competing against a large library of images is difficult. In my camera club, I am competing against some 35mm slides that are as old as I am...

Completely off topic, but I really don''t want to start a thread for this one thing. Forgive me.

John, I must apologize. All last week, and this week, I have been wondering why the heck you called your picture "Guardian Angel." Duh, it''s Garden Angel which makes a lot more sense to me.

I figured it out when I read your post aboout the camera club. Are you sure the slides are as old as you? :-)

I can read, I promise.

As far as I am concerned changing the rules is a dead issue.

It was a suggestion. I want to see the best photo's from us. As far as I am concerned the "Free Study" was the best pictures overall sent in by the photo colony. Another suggestion how about being able to enter photo dates from the conception of this web-site? Then all the pictures that would be submitted would be recent in nature. It would still bring out the best, while we would still be using what we have learned from other contests?

I agree about taking the photos the week of th challenge.

This is about new and up and coming photographers with DIGITAL cameras.

I don't want to compete against libraries of photos, even as old as 2 weeks ago. And, if you ahve been shooting digital long enough to build a semi-pro quality library..why even be here?

I may WORK with photographers and use images in my job but that is a different story from taking photos and weekly challenges.

Besides..my opinion...it's easy to be a photographer when the photo comes to YOU..it's a heck of a lot harder to go GET that photo. I think this site is about hunting down and bagging a photo..not showing us what fell in your lap. :-)

Soundly seconded...

I might only have had a digital camera for a couple of weeks but I've been scanning images taken from a couple of Nikon's (or using photo-CD) since 1988. In that time I've been all over the world and have a library measured in tens of gigabytes – I could have used a picture taken of roman ruins in Cyprus for the latest challenge, but I really think that would be missing the point entirely… As far as I'm concerned, NEW is the ONLY option for DPC…

You have convinced me maybe new is better?

I only think new is better for the purposes of the competition of this site :-)

For general sharing purposes I wish more folks here had websites or links to their past photographic efforts, film or digital.

I often hear about folks who have been shooting film for years and are sorta new to digital. They say they are frustrated that digital isn''t giving them the same quality as their past film experiences but it''s hard to tell without reference to photos.

I shoot so many photos sometimes during a week (and not all are with the current challenge in mind) I use p-base to show some of the finsihed stuff off but I have thousands of photos now that I just haven''t had time to properly edit for general consumption.

I am sure others are in the same boat and I think it would be cool to have ALL of us with a link to these photos via our profile section..Many folks don''t take advantage of the link section in our profiles. But many do and it''s cool to look at their other photos. :-)
