I don’t have a digital camera, but was interested in participating in the voting. Thought as an uninvolved participant I could be of value to the contest… I think I’ll look elsewhere as I find after looking at the last two contests that the comments most of you post are rude, hurtful and small minded. Is this a contest to see how snotty you can be to each other or is it a place to grow?… adios

Deadeye,

I'm sorry you feel that way. Though there are certainly a few who post hurtful comments (there will always be a few such people on any site that opens its doors to the world), I think the vast majority are here to help each other and learn along the way. That majority also considers the rude and hurtful comments unwelcome.

I hope you'll reconsider and stick around, but in either case I wish you all the best.

I second that. I think most people here have respect for each other.

3rd that .. could you point us to an example of what made you feel that way?

thanks

I heartily agree that there a few who are rude, but they will probably move along and meet you somewhere else. They can pop up ANY WHERE!!! Stay a while and I think your perspective might change.

Comments can easily be misinterpreted. The problem with the Internet is that it is 2-D. People don''t see your facial expressions when you are commenting. They don''t see your body language. They don''t feel your handshake, high five or pat on the back. People only see what they read. That''s why emoticons were spawned as a short of shorthand for expressing emotion through text.

Consequently, when presented with text only conversation, much of a person''s reaction and interpretation is dependent upon their own fears, anxiety, happiness, sadness, anger, etc. It has everything to do with their state of mind, and we all have highs and lows.

This phenomenon is probably here to stay, like it or not.

I've always thought this site had a much lower percentage of those kinds of remarks then you find on most internet sites. I normally get 1 or 2 rudeniks a week, but that's out of 20 or so comments.

I'd like to repeat magnetic9999's request that you point us in the direction of the offending comments.

based on his votes, i don't think he liked what he saw here anyway...

What's funny is that I never wrote "possibly offensive" comments until this week. Up until now, I was very gentle with pictures that were edging on pointlessness. Hopefully it's not one of your pictures, but I truly believe it is a waste of time if you're posting images that lack an inch of creativity, are horribly shot or don't meet the challenge at all.

Admittedly, I've realized this the hard way. Although I'm not the most typical photographer, I have had one or two images that I regret posting, but did so because I thought it was cool. I've backed off that now, partially because of commentary that almost seemed offensive, but was in fact proper because of my lack of effort.

Something like that.

From what I've seen on various writing sites, the best way to handle the rude comments is to ignore them.

I received a comment today on my photo that was "this is stupid" Well whom ever you are you are entitled to your opinion, but I think you are one of those small minded, snotty people mentioned above, or an ignorant bumpkin! I really appreciate the constructive remarks, but sometimes what some people find wrong is exactly the effect I was going after!

That is uncalled for. I guess what I meant by "possibly offensive" are comments like, "I think this is really uninspired. You had a lot to work with, but instead you just took a simple shot. Definite potential wasted."

I don't know, but do you guys think that's "rude?"

Deadeye cast 18 votes with an average of 2.667

I find this site excellent, democratic, and well-administered. There is a good response in every thread, there is good info given whenever asked by anyone, there is humor and yet threads don't degenerate into totally off-topic yak.

Deadeye, you may find this comment rude as well but I would consider an average vote of 2.667 somewhat reflective of being hurtful and smallminded. Sorry.

Dequinix, not really rude, just point blank which the world could use a little more of. When I first came on board I would have been hurt initially but have learned that these remarks are meant to help,,not hurt. I for one appreciate the more blunt remarks for they usually actually point out a problem area and help me focus more.

I think that comment was not worded as nicely as it could have been but it should have some meaning to you as it is. The comment is trying to tell you that you may have had a better angle or a more intriguing view of your subject...

Say what you want to say.

If you end up being considered an a$$hole by people you might respect and that bothers you..change. If you are considered an a$$hole or an untalented but harsh critic and don't care...keep doing it.

Thats sorta like life in a way. You probably gotta test the waters a bit before you figure out what you want to do :-)

Yes the comment had meaning, but we shouldn't condone in any way such blatent rudeness. If the people who make comments like that can't think of a kinder more effective way to express their ideas let them spew their venom somewhere else.

I know we aren't suppose to use filters here, but I confess to using one regularly... It's an idiot filter... It works like this...:

Some idiot posts "dumb" or "Yuck", it passes through my idiot filter and I read "Hi, I'm an idiot"...

Works well

Dequinix,

A comment like that is best followed with some specific suggestions for improvement. If you see potential that wasn't realized, that probable means that you have some image of a better treatment of the subject in your mind. Why not share those ideas with the photographer?

Also, I try to keep in mind that my opinions are just my opinions and frame my comments in that context. What is dull and uninspiring to me may well be incredibly powerful to someone else. My critical comments will usually be phrased as "I would have preferred...," "I feel that..." or "this doesn't really convey the meaning of the challenge to me." The key is that they are phrased in terms of my reaction to the photo.

I agree with you on much of that. Don't get me wrong, I don't say that with every picture. But I'm sure you know that in every challenge there's a few that are uncalled for. There's a fine line between artistry and idiocy, and some of these images are definitely far into the idiocy division.

This is a nasty comment by any standard...

Myself, I don't see that I'm qualified to judge beyond the personal level, but then most of us aren't. But we are here on this site to do just that. I happen to think that almost everybody on this site would be mortified if they inadvertently upset somebody with a badly worded comment and we have seen many a case in point where the insulter has apologised to the insulted and explained what they really meant. I don't think there is deliberate intent to insult or degrade a person or their work. I also happen to think that once you have reviewed 100 pictures things tend to become a little more simplistic and a lot less sympathetic – the danger point for inadvertent nastiness. I also think that in this case, the "This is stupid" comment is unacceptable as a rational judgement. To the person who wrote it - Why do you think it's stupid? My motto is "If in doubt, don't write it out!" This is a great site with a lot of talented people, but it's also got a lot of people with potential that need help and encouragement, and there are going to few that don't have a clue but try very hard (myself included), so let's not spoil it by being unnecessarily rude. Perhaps we should suggest a "Voting Beefs" forum where the comments could be discussed after the event. It might even make us a little more tactful and provide a few set methods of expressing ourselves better.

- James

I tend to shift through being addicted to various internet sites, and have taken part in least a dozen over the long term... this one ranks as one of the more polite sites I have seen. The internet is basically a rude place, and I have seen perfectly polite people in real life act quite rude. Some of this is what they are doing, and some is just perception.

In anycase people will be or seem rude on ANY intenet site and I think we are doing amazing well on this one.

Also, can moderators move threads, I think this belongs in the Rant section.
