I have just entered my first challenge and have voted on two thirds of the entries so far. I see a big difference in the quality of entries from last week. It looks to me as if a lot more people were more comfortable doing texture. Perhaps they found it easier to find appropriate subject matter all around them. I have nothing against staged shots as such but I have to say that I have been astounded by the general level of entries. I would describe the majority of entries as obvious, superficial, bland and not really engaging with the subject. I cannot say the same thing about last weeks entries, and I can't explain it.
One of the things I like about the site is the friendliness of the tone in all the discussion. But earlier on today there was a thread that began, 'At the risk of being critical...' Are we so afraid of offending anybody that being critical is a risk?

Don't be afraid to offend anyone... people get offended all the time and they get over it pretty quickly. Be critical... most people want your feedback. Be tactful at the same time and you won't have to worry about offending anyone :)

I would say that this weeks challenge was considerably harder than textures. However, I certainly liked it a lot more then textures because it really challenged one's imagination to capture subject matter in a photo in such a way that will make the person think rather than just go "Wow".

Hey!!! I'm offended by your implication there!!!

hehehe, kidding... I think the trick is to be critical without being rude. I always try (with varying degrees of success) to temper my criticisms with an understanding that I'm talking about something someone else liked enough to submit.

At the same time, some of the harshest comments I have received here have been the most helpful to me. I would suggest that you not sugarcoat your words, but don't say anything you wouldn't say to someone's face.

And I hope my saying that doesn't offend anyone :)

I appreciate your concern for other's feelings. However, I have to agree that many of the entries this week aren't as good as the last challenge. In fact, I know that my photo is no where near being some of my better work. It is a staged shot and I admit it is not very well done. Still, some of the comments have helped me to understand what I did right and what I did wrong. So bring on the criticism. Just don't leave a "it stinks" comment without saying why it stinks.

I agree -- I'm only about halfway through with the voting in Corporate World, but find the general quality down quite a bit. I'll include my entry in that same category.....I found Corporate World to be a very difficult subject and really never found the right combination of good idea and opportunity to shoot that idea. The photo I've entered is just OK. It was more of an experiment for me -- given this subject in front of you, come up with the best photo you can. I took over one hundred different photos of this subject and then played around with cropping for quite some time -- haha, all for a final result that is not too interesting! My current score is around 4.5, so everyone else is thinking about as I would have expected. Oh well....at least I got out and took photos of things that I would not normally be photographing (and learned a few things along the way).

I've, thus far, voted on two challenges, Textures and Corporate, and thought the overall quality throughout both has been really good. I've noticed that the vast majority of the corporate entries have been clever and witty and some have made powerful statements – something that can't really be done with texture. I'm not going to mention specific pictures, but I think this is going to be a closer run race than textures. I don't think the picture quality is better but the subject matter is certainly more flexible.
