| Ok, I'm constantly have people ask me if I'm canadian. (grew up in Minnesota, but I guess my outs and abouts are more oots and aboots. ) How can I take a picture of an accent?! |

well, it is winter in the southern hemisphere....
stereotypical Canada = maple syrup, beavers, moose, hockey, Terrance and Philip, socialized medicine, tar sands, and uhm, I don't know, French?

I have never in my life heard anyone say aboot, that being said, some bad stereotypes would probably make for some good entries!
I am going to try to shoot a mountie in red serge riding his horse out of an igloo while holding a bottle of maple syrup and being chased by beavers. It's expert editing right?!?

| In terms of Canadian food, well there's always poutine...essentially french fries coated in gravy and squeaky cheese curds...Beavertails, a deep-fried pastry developed here in Ottawa by a guy named Hooker...Nanaimo bars from BC...and of course my personal fave, sirop d'erable. Other foods could include tourtiere. |

Yeah, but I don't think berries pounded together with meat and dried to make an extra-nutritious jerky by the Aboriginals is exclusive to Canada. And yes, Tangy, we do have bison. We also have Indian candy, corn, clams, lobster, PEI potatoes, Yukon Gold potatoes, Newfoundland Screech, cod tongues and I bet Robin ( FromDaRock) probably knows a whole bunch more Maritime recipes.
BTW Wendy...I wouldn't worry too much about the 'aboot' thing. Personally I can't think of anyone who's ever said 'aboot', and I've lived mostly in Ontario, many years in BC, a few months in New Brunswick and spent lots of time in Quebec. I suspect it's more of a regional Maritime thing :-) |

It's not quite as pronounced (pun intended) as that spelling makes it out ("oot"?) to be, but even when subtle it is distinctive to Canadians and those who live in the north-central USA (e.g. Minnesota) -- just listen to almost any hockey broadcast for an example ...

Newfoundland's equivalent of poutine is chips, dressing and gravy (fries covered with turkey stuffing and smothered in gravy). Then there's toutons, figgy duff, bread pudding, jigs dinner, salt beef, etc... |
