I have a Canon PowerShot S500 and I have 3 compactflash cards. I have 32, 128, and 256 MB. How many do you use? Also, how long do you leave the photographs on a compact flash before resetting card? I am wondering if everyone as soon as they download the photos reset the cards? How often do you backup your all your new photographs to CD?

I've got two CF cards a 256 and a 1 gig. I usually download the pictures to the computer as soon as I can. They usually get left on the card until the next shoot, and then the card gets formatted or fully erased. I have yet to back up my photos on cd... maybe I should get on that?

I have 3 x 256 MB, and now just bought a 1GB (now that I bought the rebel). I usually copy to computer as soon as I get home. I use a PC Card and read the CF card directly. So I usually drag / move the folders with the pics to the computer, then I don't have to remember to erase them in the camera, and there's never any doubt as to whether the pics on the card are "copied" or not.

Because I write to the card in this step with the computer, I am careful to properly remove the CF card / PC Card by 'stopping' it first.

I download them all and then I format or delete all photos

I have two 1gb cards and one 512mb card. I think I still have the 32mb card that came with my s500 around here somewhere, but i haven't seen it lately. I use the 512 card in the s500 and I also use it to carry photos to the local 1 hour lab for 4x6 prints rather than burning them to a CD. I may try to dig up the 32mb card for that purpose though.

I never leave images on my card very long. I usually download them to my PC at the end of the shoot or at the end of the shooting day.

I have 3 * 256MB cards and 3 * 512MB cards. That's normally enough for an event I'm covering.

During the event I will copy the cards to X-Drive II (portable hard disk) but not delete the pics off the card, so I'll bring back two copies.

After the event I will copy the files to hard disk for editing, which will be left on the hard disk for a few months then backed up to DVD-R.

I also have a seperate backup process that backs up my X-Drive II files, so I'll end up with two DVD-Rs containing the pics.

I have 3 512mb and 2 256mb. I still think I don't have enough. I am always wishing I had more. I always dump them as soon as I am done with a shoot.

two 256, one 128, one 16

1x 4GB microdrive, 2x 512MB Lexar 80x, 1x 1GB Lexar 40x, 2x 1GB Sandisk Ultra II. I usually download them when I can whether they're full or not. If I'm out and about, I'll just keep filling them up and swap cards with an empty one then dump the photos to my computer.

3 x 256MB CF cards (actually one is being used in my MP3 Player). I use a regular Sandisk and a Sandisk Ultra. I'll need a higher speed card now that I have a 20D. I'll be getting a 1GB Ultra II, and use my 256MB Ultra I when I'm uploading my 1GB card to my X Drive. My XDrive has a 15GB capacity.

This could almost be a support Group thread.. 'Hi, I'm Chris, and I have 5 CF cards...' :-).

2x512Mb and 3x128. In the nikon 2500 which is used for snapshots and road trips the photos can stay on there for weeks. On the G5 I generally take the photos, download em to computer (card reader) and clear the card.

Images I want to keep go on our gallery which lives on a server here at home. It's backed up to tape once a week or so, and a nightly incremental backup is made to another PC if it's turned on, by a cron job. So far there's 3500 images in there, and 4.5Gb of data and climbing. I also keep some images on CD (Like the 1500 of my daughter, all of which are not in the gallery, but the CD copies have outtakes, so to speak.) I've started scanning my 3000+ 35mm photos to go into the online gallery as well, so I can have an 'offsite' backup of them.

My parents and a few friends have access to the gallery via the web, which has been great for baby photos and my parents, as the live over an hour away, but have seen new photos of our Daughter every week since she was born (13 months ago, still in lots-a-photos mode).

My photos are pretty important to me, but how do you say 'Geek'? :-).

I have only (1) card, but it's a 4GB Microdisc. Thinking I should get a back-up, but I don't have the funds right now.

I haven't backed up my computer in a few months - I probably should. I download my pics as soon as possible, and then delete them from the card right away.

I have 4 256ers and 3 512ers and 2 128ers, CF (for 10D), MemoryStick and MemoryStickPro for the Sony F717 - more than enough. I used to take too many shots in a short period of time. No it's very few shots, some taking a long time (to find, consider, explore and feel out).

I format each card instantly, every time, after downloading the images on it. I routinely back up my iPhoto library every 5.000 captures or so to DVD, unless, of course, there is a real gem among them. When that happens, I may just quit photography altogether and take up meditation or something... ;-)

How many do you use?

2 - 256mb
2 - 128mb
1 - 32mb
1 - 8mb (came with my first digi, but I have needed in the past when desperate!)

Hoping to get one or two 512mb's soon.

Also, how long do you leave the photographs on a compact flash before resetting card?

Depends. Sometimes transfer them and clean the card right off. Sometimes leave them on the card for a few weeks, either until I need the whole card again or if I just want to add to it.

How often do you backup your all your new photographs to CD?

Not often enough! I need to do that again. I wish I had a better system...

(3) 512 Mb and (2) 1 Gb cards for my 2 cameras. I always want more cards since I shoot RAW or High JPG. Image sizes are generally around 4.5 Mb each so smaller cards are a waste of time for me.

I've got the cameras set to just keep increasing the photo numbers (I don't reset) and DL into a monthly folder on my hard-drive as soon as I return from shooting. I don't edit anything in that folder (they are my negatives) and I back-up once a month. I pull photos to be edited into another folder on a separate hard drive.

I have 2 x 256MB, 1 x 128MB and 1 x 8MB that I share between my iPAQ (usually keep a 256MB in there) and my A40 and Digital Rebel.

I am definitely picking up a few cards over the next few months as they just keep dropping! I'll probably get an Ultra II 1GB or 2 x 512MB...we'll see...

Edit: I pull the photos off my card at the end of the shoot or the end of the day. I have yet to back up my photos to cd as I just started all of this about two months ago.

1 x 512
1 x 256
1 x 32

Only once have I needed all three. Usually the 512 is sufficient (and in RAW even).

1 x 1GB
1 x 32MB

Memory sticks...so unfortunately when I make the plunge to a DSLR it will be time to buy some CF cards...

Too many...

(2) IBM Microdrives @ 1GB
(2) Extreme 1 GB
(1) Extreme 512 MB
(1) 196 MB
(6) 128 MB
(8) various smaller sized units (16 / 64 MB) of no real data storage value for me.

With a new Nikon D2x coming in January, I expect to add some larger CF cards - 2 GB or even 4 GB, to accommodate the huge 12 MP images that are shot in both RAW and JPEG simultaneously.

If anyone wants to purchase the smaller drives, drop me a PM.

Exactly the same here, although a majority of the photos I took with my old camera are on CD and not on my hard drive. I was talking to a friend photographer yesterday and he said he has 5 cards, 1 512 and 4 256s.

I use the smaller cards which typically come with the camera as temporary transport when taking print files to the store. If you have a card read, the combination can function just like those little flash storage units people are flaunting on their keychains for transporting any kind of files.
