A few people have noticed it, but I see nothing about it in the forums. This week's winner in the Square challenge was taken back in October 2002 (according to the exposure date).

Should this picture not be DQed?

Good spot mariomel,I agree it should be DQ,shame cause it,s a good shot

Seems to me it should be checked but it may have been a mistake on the information entered. Let's not call anyone guilty before proof.

the person's last entry for road signs was taken outside the challenge dates according to the exposure date also.

It is being discussed :)

This subject was briefly discussed this morning in the "Question?" thread. It should be investigated. It might just be a typo. JMSetlzer advises us they are looking into it. They will be able to confirm it with the EXIF file.

It would be a shame to DQ the winner, but rules are rules. I would like Admin. to advise us if it was just a typo.

The date select method is no longer typed in as such, but is selected by a series of drop-down boxes. It is still possible to make an error here, but a lot less likely.

Hi everybody. Obout my submission "Stairway to Squares" I have to say that it was taken on October 8 last year. It has been a BIG misunderstood of the rules (I,m from Spain and English is not my first language). When DP Challenge changed recently my understanding about when the picture has to be taken was wrong. In the Road Signs contest I also sent an old picture, so I did this week with the Cliche contest (I already asked for the disqualification of this last). You can't believe how I felt this morning, after realize I was wrong. Please accept my apologies. My purpose participating in this great weekly contest is to see other pictures and, specially, see the reation and coments of my submissions. Break a rule to win is like lie yourself, it has no meaning to me. Sorry to all of you.

Well spoken, Pep, and I am sure we all appreciate your misunderstanding and the straightforward actions you have taken since the discovery of the mistake. I for one look forward to seeing many more of your images in the future.

Thank you for your honesty. It is a shame to see a picture disqualified for any reason, but especially for one simply because somebody did not understand the rule.

Now that you understand it, go out there and shoot some more. Hopefully we'll see you on the podium again soon. ( I hope to make it there one day myself. LOL)

Good luck, and thanks.

Sorry to hear that Pep. It is a shame to see a winning photo DQd. I've been there myself, again, for not understanding the rules, but it's just one of those things. I hope this will not put you off, and I wish you good luck in future challenges :)

Pep, sorry to hear about the misunderstanding. We will probably be seeing you with a ribbon soon enough now that you understand the rules. Your honesty is appreciated.

Since this has now occurred twice (ribbon holder being DQ'ed for being outside of the date range) could a check be made when the entry is submitted (similar to checking file size) that would warn/prevent users from submitting photos outside the time frame or catch data entry errors? If I know Drew/Langdon this may already be either in the works or being discussed.

No apology needed Pep, it was an honest mistake.
I can't imagine how bad you feel :(

But ... at least you know you're good enough to win, so keep trying!

Pep, I'm sorry to hear about the misunderstanding. I can't even imagine how disappointed you must be. It was a great picture. We'll see you in the winner circle sooner or later with great shots like that. Good luck, and keep your chin up.

Pep, when I just read what you wrote I felt so sad for you. Your words touched me and I can understand how you feel. I am so sorry it happened this way, I know what it is like living in a foreign country and very often misunderstandings occur because the grasp of the language is not like that of a native speaker.

I think it was wonderful of you to write what you did after realising your mistake, I respect that! And as everyone else has said here you will surely get that ribbon back again in another challenge soon looking at the quality of your photos!

All the best and keep shooting those great shots, I look forward to seeing your next photos.

I think the reactions from everyone to Pep's statement were great. I like being here and when I see such things, it only reassures me that I made the right choice. I only hope if I make some kind of mistake that I get the same reaction......

As the third place winner (that would move to 2nd place) I'd like to suggest we don't nitpick the rule here and that Pep's photo be left as the rightful winner. It's a wonderful shot.

A great person once said "Rules were made to be broken" (at least I assume it was a great person)... Let's all pretend we never noticed and go on with our lives :)

I agree with mygyl. Why punish him for it when he never really knew. I mean it isn't as if he did it on purpose. The only thing that will happen if he is DQed is that everyone will move one place forward. I am sure it is something to consider.
02/03/2003 04:20:30 PM · #21
It is not a matter of punishment.. just fair application of the rules. Other photos have been disqualified for the same reasons. It would not be fair to them to have been treated differently, and not fair to those who are following the rules and playing within the spirit of the challenge; to take your best photo that week, and submit. The time limit is part of the challenge.

As much as I can sympathise with Pep, and believe me I do, that would be stealing a ribbon from the fourth (in truth, third place) photographer. It will be his first, and he deserves it. He doesn't have to feel bad about the way he got it either. He came in third place among photographs taken during the challenge week. Pep's photo was the highest rated, and it was a real good one, but was taken outside a critical rule.

By the way, the winner of Something Old was disqualified for using an illegal filter. His picture was removed, and all the other photos were bumped up one.
02/03/2003 04:28:40 PM · #23
I agree: Being "fair" to Pep would mean being "unfair" to, say, Ben (Konador) who had a first place finish stricken through a similar mistake.
02/03/2003 04:35:16 PM · #24
And what if there were more at stake.. such as a prize - not saying there will be, just playing devil's advocate - associated with the win? Would you still say ... "oh it was an honest mistake" ?...(not picking on Pep in particular, but disussing the issue in general).
02/03/2003 04:48:13 PM · #25
Okay you are right I am convinced....I guess I just feel sorry for Pep. Rules are rules.
