In the analysis of the 'Free Study' challenge, people seemed to be complaining that there weren't enough abstract or esoteric type images. And what could be more abstract a challenge than 'Texture'. So I thought, right let's see just how bizarre I can make this :-). Unfortunately, it seems that baffling people doesn't get you a very good score :-(. Oh well.

For those that are interested, the shot is of a loud speaker cone, just VERY close up. The frame is maybe 1" across. The weave part is the cone itself (it's actualy bright yellow). The blue, out of focus bit is the plug in the centre (actualy black but very reflective). It is out of focus because at this point there is about a 1" gap between it and the cone (hence the shadow it's casting on the cone) and I thought the blurry reflections looked quite good anyway! The white, burn't out part is just more cone but not in the shadow and so completely vapourised in the flash. The odd colours are because the flash was fired full strength at point blank and the surfaces are all pretty reflective so the image is seriously over exposed. The only part of the image I'm not happy with is the specles which are dust particles. They show up far too much under the extreme lighting :-(.

For those thar are really interested (is anyone even still reading this?), some alternative (less wierd) images can be found in my humble little gallery. There are also a few alternatives for my 'Free Study' along with the setup used to create them.

Any comments? Would any of the alternatives have faired better?

I think #2 would have done much better.
It wasn''t only that no one knew what it was, it also didn''t clearly show the texture.
#2 shows it.
(Don''t go by me - I think any of my others would have scored higher then the one I picked. Check my photos for outakes.)
Oh I forgot to add the link. Too late now.

Hendric..I really liked your photo, especially the whiteness of it.

I gave you a 6 but would have scored it higher if the texture had a bit more contrast on the surface.

But the shape of the compostion and the push on the birghtness attracted me.

Hey Hendrik, what kind of speakers are those?

Hendrik, I too liked your work as an abstract. I guessed a speaker from the title and am pleased to know the shooting details. However, in my opinion you should have entered #2. It's great. aelith

Number 2 probably would have scored better, BUT I still like the one you submitted better. It was bizarre enough to attract my attention, and not weird enough to make me leave :-) I liked it.
