I'm trying to crop a picture to 1600x1600 for a cd cover and my lack of general PS knowledge is killing me. I want the crop to be tight so that it captures the subjects head, neck and just the upper part of his chest. So I figured I could just go to image size and increase the pixels thinking that, as I did so, the preset crop of 1600x1600 would capture less and less area. However, as God is my witness, no matter how big I make it the crop seems to capture the same area every damn time! What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure I understand. What happens when you use the crop tool instead of just entering the crop size?

So if I take the picture as is, from my camera and set the crop tool to 1600px by 1600px, it captures more area than the subject wants on the cd cover. The image size on the uncropped raw is 5616 by 3744, so I assumed if I resized it, doubling the pixels in each direction the crop tool would get a tight crop, but it seems to crop the same amount of picture each time. Either I am explaining it wrong or I dont understand how this works at all.

Shouldn't you just crop the image first and resize it after? I don't see the point of the 1600 crop if it doesn't crop the part of the image you want.

if i just crop the area i want and then force it to 1600 each side it would distort the image, no?

Try using the rectangular marquee tool set to square ratio (8x8, 10x10 etc) and then drag it over the area you want. That will give you the range you want without distortion and then resize as necessary.

Why would it do that, unless your crop was not square? If you square crop and then resize to 1600 pixels maintaining the aspect ratio, you will get a 1600x1600 image.

i think the main points to consider here are:
1) are you cropping a square section?
() if so, set your crop dimensions (unsure exactly how PS does it, but PaintShop Pro has a great tool with presets, then you just grab an edge and set you area)
() once area set and cropped, resize existing image to your 1600x1600 requested resolution
2) is the area actually not a square (such as a rectangular area)
() if so, you can't set it to 1600x1600 without distortion
() can you make it a square area? if so, see step #1

what not to do:
{}set a 1600x1600 pixel grid to crop in the full size image
{}try to force a non-squared-crop into a squared format on resize - you'll get a distorted image
{}only agree to work with a single set of confined options.
---if you're unable to get what the guy is looking for, work with them to get something you can do and they like
{}disregard legitimate suggestions from people who are working with you to try and assist you with your dilemma.
---perhaps you could upload a screenshot (in windows, alt+print screen, then paste into imaging program, even ms paint, save to jpg, upload and show us) of what is causing you grief; or upload the file to a secure hosting location and allow someone to assist you.

thanks again and thanks for the help Ryan, I found what I was looking for in lightroom by using it's 1 to 1 crop function to zoom in to where i want it and then can work with it in PS and resize how I like. Sorry for my dysfuntional brain and communication skills :(

I'm using PSE 12 and to do what I think you're looking for, I would use a 5X5 inch crop to get the section of the picture I wanted, then go to Image/Resize/Image Size, Change to Picas and type in 1600.

1600 picas is about 22 feet ...

Would using the 5X5 inch crop and saving for web at 1600 px work?

You do a square crop in PS by holding the shift key when cropping.

Thanks, these little tips are great.

Is there something like a cheat sheet I could print out that has a bunch of these PS tips & tricks?

A Google Image search for "Photoshop shortcuts" had these results.

Don't make it harder than it needs to be. Set dimensions of the crop tool in toolbar at top, then crop. 1600px may reduce quality of original, so make it the highest rez you want. Printer can resize for CD cover. As long as it's a square, you're good, right?

I found those but they are just short cuts to the commands, I was looking for some tips & tricks type of sheet.

They aren't all just shortcuts to the commands, but you have to give the search results a fair shake. I found this link below after looking through the Google search results for under 5 minutes. Perhaps I have more patience than most. My college degree is essentially in Google Searching, heh.

Just for the heck of it, here is the shot in question. The red was not to my liking but give the customer what they want
