So as part of the deal to get me to go run a half marathon in Florida, of all things, my friend agreed we could go to Universal's Harry Potter parks while we're there. She's not a photographer. So my question is - do I take the "big" camera, or just the point and shoot? Any of you been there? Worth taking the big camera? My point and shoot tends to be wide, sucks at telephoto. Will I regret not taking the bigger camera??

I'd find their website and check their rules -- you'll certainly regret taking the big camera if they won't let you in with it.

I didn't see anything prohibiting DSLRs, and I do take it when I go to Universal Studios here.

HHmmmmm.... I suppose I could invest in one of the micro 4/3rds cameras.... heh heh heh

I don't know about whether I would regret taking the big camera to the Harry Potter park, but I would regret committing to a half marathon. That would likely kill me.

Nah, piece of cake. If I can do it, ANYONE can. Trust me on that! And it's supposed to be fun, or something like that. Princesses and wanna-be princesses everywhere. Even the gents wear tutus. I am taking my phone for the run, so I can take a picture here and there. Which brings me to a separate question - anyone know what a Galaxy S4 will suddenly have the Android OS just suck the battery dry in less than an hour? Happens every now and then, but I've yet to figure out why or what sets it off.

Shouldn't be a problem with a DSLR in any of the parks. Tripods and now selfie sticks can be an issue.

Cameras are everywhere there...

]they aren't...I'm at the parks all the time (advantages of your kids working there) but I take my tripod in all the time...and no questions about my camera bag...other than a possible question if I'm professional?

I had that happen with my S4 once, rebooted, and it has never returned. I have noticed that "Location" drains it pretty quick, but not in less than an hour. When it does it the next time, go to Settings > ...More > Battery to be sure it's a system process that's draining it. Also, you might check Settings > ...More > Application manager. By default it puts you on the "Downloaded" tab, but swipe to the right until you get to the "Running" tab. See what apps are actually running to make sure nothing is trying to be sneaky.

I was there last August and had no issues with my 7D. We were there for a few days, and most of the time I just brought along a P&S, but I did go in one morning early to take a few shots with the DSLR at Hogsmead (Islands of Adventure). The coolest thing (IMHO) to get shots of is the fire breathing dragon at Gringotts in Diagon Alley (Universal). This would be pretty cool to shoot late in the day to see the fire well against the sky. (I have some video of that in the daytime).

This was shot with my P&S though, I never did get the chance to bring my DSLR to Universal.

I was just there again in December, and there are plenty of people with DSLRs everywhere. I took my iPhone :) If you want to ride the more daring rides, you'll need to do something with the camera. The more gentle rides may have a place for you to stow the camera under the seat, etc., but you'll have to stick it in a locker for others.

Come to think of it, there are several rides that wouldn't allow ANYTHING. I think it was the Incredible Hulk ride (for one) that made us rent a locker to store virtually everything we had on us. They literally wouldn't let you ride with a cell phone in your pocket! They had it set up in such a way that you could rent a locker for free for the length of the ride, but some of the kids in our group got screwed and ended up having to pay a few bucks to retrieve their items. It was surprisingly strict.

Oh yeah - last time it happened it went from 100% charge to 15% in less than an hour and the battery said 97% was Android OS. Weird.

Thanks for all the info! I do realize I *can* take my DSLR.... just trying to decide whether I want to! I'm more of an explorer than a rider.
