Anyone interested in a January portrait side challenge.
Only rules:

At least 10 portraits for the month.
Encourage each other and try new stuff.
Join anytime.

I'd like to spend more time here at DPC in 2015. I've been hanging around other sites and enjoying it, (even won some contest and some cool prizes) but something is missing. Most of them are rather large and less family like I guess. I'm more interested in crafting my skill and sharing ideas. Side challenges have always been the best part of DPC for me.

Any takers?

Jeff

I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.
Might be fun to do some inside stuff while it's cold.

Maybe we could think of 10 themes, not that we would have to follow them if we don't want to, but it might give those of us wanting to do something different some ideas. That way those who need a bit of direction will have it but those who just want to do their own thing could just do that.

Ideas could be:
Self portrait
Dramatic lighting
Same pose three different angles
Black and white

Anyway you get the idea....

This is NOT my usual area, and because I need a good kick start for the coming year, I would like to try this. Mine will be like kindergarten drawings next to those of you who have already expressed interest, but, hopefully, I will learn a lot and improve to first grade elementary standing. :)

This is an excellent idea, Jeff. Count me in.

This makes me feel so scared - shooting people is so uncomfortable. But I really want to improve my portrait skills so this is a great place to start.

And what a way to keep the brain active in January!

I'm in.

I love this idea. (not mandatory) Just a great way to get started. I'll add some ideas to Jen's.

Self portrait
Dramatic lighting
Same pose three different angles
Black and white
Cartoon
Before and After
Portrait mash (combine 2 or more portraits)

Ok, I haven't taken any portraits yet, but I am getting geared up to get a serious start this weekend.

Me too! Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. I'm going to work on twisting my style a bit and breaking my normal processing.

I'd like to give this a shot as well... Sounds like fun and I look forward to seeing everyone's stuff.

Count me in. I don't have any lighting and I don't usually have any willing models, but I'll see what I can do.

Just adding a few more to the list just to give everyone a few more ideas. Not mandatory of course but I am going to try to do at least a few of these:

Self portrait
Dramatic lighting
Same pose three different angles
Black and white
Cartoon
Before and After
Portrait mash (combine 2 or more portraits)
Back lit
pet portrait
extreme close up
Shot from above (take a portrait looking down on your subject)
Shot from below (take a portrait with your subject looking down at you)
Tryptic
candid
street
natural lit indoors
outdoor shot
inside artificial lighting (whatever you have got)

Okay there are a few more ideas that should get everyone going. I was going to try and get something this weekend but everyone seems to be coming down with the flu at our house :( Still going to try, I don't have it yet and my oldest daughter isn't showing any signs yet so I've at least got two models.

I'm in! Well, not yet, but I'll going to be!

I'll get the party started. These shots are from a recent shoot I did at work for some colleagues.

Of course it wouldn't be right if I left them alone. Don't want my Creative Cloud subscription to go to waste.

I am in the same boat. I have a portrait I shot, but it's been entered rather than shared here. I will shoot more.

I didn't get around to doing any studio shots like I planned this weekend. Instead I used one from an icefishing trip we took this Saturday. I wanted to show you what you can do to transform an ordinary snapshot from an iphone.

Here are the before and after:

And here are all the steps in between with details on what I did to each in the comments:

If I wait for human models willing to cooperate the month will pass me by.

So, Jenn -- how did you even out the shadow on her face? I can't ever seem to do that so seamlessly.
