I am getting a new computer that will have a DVD burner:) I will now be able to "save" my photos! My old computer with several hundred pics on it only has a floppy drive:(

How will I get my pics from my old computer to my new computer so that I can "save" them? I will be going from Windows 98 to XP.

You have a few options here. Depending on your knowledge of computers one might be easier than another. If you're not sure how to do any of these things you could ask a family member who is good with computers, search the internet and teach yourself, or if all else fails take it to a store and have them do it.

1) Put your old hard drive in your new computer and copy the files.

2) Put your new DVD burner in your old computer and burn the files.

3) Network the computers together and copy the files over.

If your current computer has a USB port you might find an external Iomega zip drive a very useful and extremely straightforward solution ;they're pretty inexpensive these days and you can choose versions that take re-useable disks with capacities of 100MB, 250MB or 750MB.

I'm also switching from a Win 98 PC to a new XP vehicle this week and will be carrying my extensive photo collection over with a USB external hard drive which I intend to use for permanent storage. It's only guaranteed for two years but may prove more reliable than the CDs I also have images backed up to. Remember ! You can NEVER make too many "safety" copies of the files that matter most to you.

Enjoy your new machine !

By far the easiest, least expensive solution will likely be to network the 2 machines, create a share, and copy the files over. Most new machines will have an ethernet card and if the old one doesn't, you could get a slow one for very little money.

Thanks gang! You gave me lots of options.

I just installed a network interface card to my old computer so that I can go DSL this week. Perhaps that will let me link the two together down the line.

I also like the idea of an external hard drive as a back-up for the `important stuff`. Will that fit into an Easter basket? ;)

I am so stocked at going DSL in the next few days!

It is just a blink of an eye in time...But...I get to be "stocked" today! Yah Me!
