Does anyone know if anyone out there is making a panoramic Head that supports the Canon PowerShot G2? I have seen a lot for the Nikon Digital Cameras but I haven't been able to find one that says it supports the PowerShot G2 yet.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks again!

I'm not sure what a Pano-Head is; I assume it's an attachment to a tripod to take multiple shots so you can later combine them into a wide panoramic scene. I just use my tripod and rotate from left to right on the horizontal axis. Works great with Photo Stitch (software came with the camera).

Hope this helps.

the Panoguide.com web site has lots of good information about creating panoramas. The link above goes to their 'gear' page.

A pano-head is different to a normal tripod head in that it tries to ensure that the film/sensor plane rotates around the center of the axis of rotation - which isn't always true with most tripods, due to the location of the tripod mount. Normally not a big deal, but causes offsets when rotating for panoramas. They also usually have things like angle markers to help get even overlaps.

Jacko,

Exactly right. That is what it is for. I also have used the PhotoStitch that came wiht my G2. You may want to check out Panorama Factory though. It is much better than the PhotoStitch. If you want me to let me know and I can send it to you. It is about 6 or 7MB for the whole program.

Here is why I want a pano-head. If you have noticed the tripod mount for the G2 is not center of the camera lense which means that the camera does not actually pivot at the center of the lense when on a tripod. That is why you get the ghosting some times when trying to match the stitches up. A pano-head sits on the tripod and then you can adjust the camera appropriately so that it will pivot at the cameras center point.

You are right though, the Canon G2 and PhotoStitch software do a really nice job. You will see a difference though if you check out PanoramaFactory.

Let me know if you try it and what you think.

Thanks for the help!

I've found that PanoTools and PTGui are about the best option for
doing Panoramas. More work perhaps to use than other options, but
one of the few that can handle a tilted camera and adjust for pitch/yaw
as well as roll of individual frames.

A couple of samples:
Texas Capitol - 9 frames stitched
and
Times square (15 shots stitched)
