I saw a short piece on this story on the news the other night. Quite fascinating for sure!

Admittedly, some of the technicals aren't all there, but I don't think it's as much about that as aesthetics

Frankly, I don't see the point of the exercise. Doing the same thing in the same country would likely have resulted in vastly different images as well. Unless there is a reasonable sample size from each country that shows some common themes that could be attributed to cultural differences, it really isn't representative of anything.

Geesh, it isn't meant to be a scientific experiment with verifiable results... It's just an interesting superficial probe into varying standards of beauty. Or something...

yah. but surely there is something profound in that the U.S. shopped her the most, followed at a distance by Pakistan.

I'd say Kenya had the lightest touch.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You did well without it.

You should send that to her... Seriously. Bet she'd crack up.

There is a different version of this on facebook. The USA photoshopping in the alternate viewing is even more ludicrous with a ridiculously pinched nose.

And the Philippines in the other version is more than a cheap business suit and no makeup. I will continue to look for the link...

Sent it off and mentioned our little family here. I'll let you know if I hear back from her. :)

Her reply to my email ...

"Hey thank you that's really cool. I get a lot of feedback concerning the quality of the photoshop which i am very aware of. I think skill level definitely plays a role in the outcome of this project, but I also think that had I even been able to contract high end professionals it would have been a very different project. My thought is that by working with amateurs it may have been a bit more "grassroots" so to speak. what are you thoughts?"

Anyone have any thoughts for her? I'll invite her to come to the forum to interact with us.

Without knowing what Jeff's message said, it's not possible to say.

I happen to agree with her response. To me this wasn't an exercise to see who could photoshop the best. It was to sound out regional differences to the concept of "beauty". Whether or not the experiment was successful is the matter for debate. The fact that she used "grassroots" locals makes the response more "genuine" to my mind.

Here is the link I was talking about, Alternate

Look at the USA in this one... weirdly young and Michael Jacksonish.

I am not sure I agree with that point. Going "grassroots" is a double edged sword. While you will get opinions on beauty that are more regional and therefore more interesting for the project, by using people with fewer PS skills, they are limited in expressing their views on ideal beauty by what they know how to manipulate digitally.

While I hate programs like PortraitPro they do speak to idealized beauty by rearranging bone structure, shoving around facial features and scrubbing skin to a featureless perfection. It is a very complex and complete imposition of what the standards of beauty are, at least according to one group of programmers. Asking someone who only knows how to do the basics in Elements to make the magic happen is tougher. They can add a coat of paint, cause we all know gals ain't pretty without some paint on their face. But if the skills were there would they have given her blonde hair cheekbones you could cut yourself on and a cute button nose? We don't know if the limits were taste or skills.

YES! Of all of them, that version most infantilizes the model. Scary.

I don't know... Argentina, Phillipines... pretty out there as well. But yes, US takes the cake.

But, ouch! The one from Australia really made me cringe.

The weirdest to me is India, where they edit out the collarbones. That is that about?
