Hi all

I see erally great infrared shots and have been looking on the web about this technique.... they all talk about using filters. Is it possible with PS to create infrared-like photos???

Thanks!!!!!! :o)

There's no replacement for an infrared filter, but I've found that, for portraits, a channel mixer setting of R72 G28 B5 comes closeish.

Are you talking about physical filters, that attach to your lens, or plugin filters for Photoshop? There are PS infrared plugins available that do a decent job, but the effect does not seem to be as pronounced as with a good lens filter.

I find that sometimes you can get a good black and white infrared effect in PhotoShop by opening up a color image and just looking at the Red, Green, and Blue channels. One of them usually has an infrared look to them. You can then delete the unwanted channels and use the resulting b&w as a starting point (ie, you can then adjust contrast etc...)

-or-

I think its the channel mixer that allows you to select "monchromatic" and I think you then have to boost the green channel while lowering the othr two (in a typical scenery type picture, for ex)

If I find the source of where I heard these techniques I will post them...

Fred Miranda has created a great PS action to simulate IR. Nothing really matches it but his is really nice. Just using channel mixer will do OK but there is a certain amount of blur that is generated by IR in certain color spaces that Fred's action has accounted for.

Couple examples...

Then TRUE IR shots...

I think he charges 10 bucks for the action at his site fredmiranda.com

The green folage in IR landscapes appears washed out and slightly blurey.
So to simulate the IR look, basicly you wash out the green channel and give it a slight blur then convert to greyscale.
