Here is my May Free Study entry, and the original image. Your challenge, should you decide to accept it, is to re-edit it and see what you can do with it. Post your results, and what you did here. I am interested to see what others could do with this, and to learn something to improve my PP as well.

I liked the capture, but the light was pretty flat and dull. Admittedly, the PP was a little over the top. Some loved it, some hated it. I had mixed feelings as well, but did about the best I could with it. My steps: LR crop, Adjust highlights, shadows and tone curve, export to PSE12, Topaz Adjust, DeNoise and Simplify, resize, Adamus sharp, SFW. Interested to see what you might have done with it.

Thanks for playing (and if you want the fullsize TIFF, just shoot me a PM and I will email it to you).

I'm not very big on doing a whole lot of PP. Mainly because I am not very good at it, but also because I like more simplistic things.

Here's my simple take on it...

All I did was crop, levels, curves, dodging, B&W conversion, levels (again) and add border... I think that was all... just some basic things.

Sidenote: I uploaded it to my portfolio and added your username to the description of it. I don't normally do this and I'm not fully familiar with the etiquette of editing someone else's image or the purpose of the portfolio but couldn't find anything in the forums about that..

I liked your edit, and I think you did as much as you could with this shot post-processing. However, if you're looking for post-processing advice, I think you're looking in the wrong direction. I think you should look instead to your shooting and consider getting closer or get a longer lens to grab a bird at this distance, and consider the light. The light here is pretty harsh. I'm not a bird photographer, but my favorite bird shots are when you really don't notice the processing. My 2 cents.

Oh no! I think you just summoned godzilla to emerge from the waters by asking for pp help

Thanks, Revecca, B+W was a good idea. No worries posting it on your page, its fair game. And I don't think anyone's going to be swiping it for NatGeo. ecmguy is right, a longer lens and better light would do way more than any PP magic, and that is always the best place to start. But this month I had nothin, and so the challenge for me was to make something out of nothing. Sometimes you work with what you got. :-) Don't worry macwilyum, I've got a thick skin (maybe not Godzilla thick, but been around here long enough to know how to take it!)

Thanks, all for the interest!

Candid shot from your "blind" Embossed metal plaque

Only actual editing was some dodging/buringin to the eye to make it stand out at least a little, and slight RGB and Blue Curves adjustments. "Metallic" version made by playing around with a partially-inverted Curves adjustment layer -- just dragging points around until I got something "interesting" ...
