I don't have any pictures currently in challenges, but if I ever do submit again......
I would like to be a better photographer that appeals to a wider audience (wouldn't we all?). The only way I'm going to accomplish this is through your comments. It's really nice to see comments from those people that scored a shot in the upper half (good for the ego), but that's not going to broaden my understanding (Nice Picture!).
If a photo doesn't appeal to you and you want to score it 1-4, I'd appreciate knowing what was soooo bad, even a few words. If you don't want to discuss it, don't sign the comment, but if you are willing to discuss your reasons, sign the low score comment and let's talk. I will try very, very hard to refrain from arguing and if there's no typed name in the comment, I won't persue it further, but folks, it's the only way I'm ever going to get better. Please be kind and help.

Thank you very much.

I recently decided to leave meaningful comments on 5 to 10 images each challenge. I feel it's better to try to do a good review of 5 photos than to make a short comment on 30 or 40. Approximately half of my comments have been rated as helpful, so I guess I'm doing OK with my critiques. Send me some photos and I'll make some comments for you, hopefully some that will help. I've gotten to the point that I like comments on my images way more than checking my score. So as not to be hypocritical, I feel I need to make some in depth comments each challenge as well. I'm trying to make my contribution to this site quality rather than quantity.

Yes Yes Yes. I agree 100%!

I have the feeling that unfortunately many people think like "If I can't say something nice it's better to not say anything". This is not good for learning! If we just keep patting on our backs we won't get anywhere.

For example I recently got some scores in the 4.x range (this week will be one too) because I'm ... well.. trying some things. I got some very helpful feedback, but I wish there was more. Well, I'm a comment junkie as probably most of us ;-) but there aren't so many criticising comments as one would expect for such a low score.

So please don't hesitate to say that you don't like a photo any why. Rude comments of course aren't nice although I personally can handle them and think it's better than no criticism at all.

Thank you :-)

I'm trying a couple of new things. After I vote, I start from the lowest scored picture and comment up (thanks Tom Walthrop for the idea!). Then, when I comment, first I try to find the "good" in the photo, what I like about it, then I agonize over how to say what I don't like and make suggestions, if I can think of any. I also try to recognize issues that can't be controlled and comment them with that noted, example Overhead Wires. I don't like them, but they are pretty much unavoidable at times. So I note that. I honestly can't see taking points away for those kinds of issues.

This is strictly encouragement. An attempt on my part to create some good Karma.

Oh yes, I'm not as easy going as Stephan. I can't take rude or unkind comments. It's my failing, but I'm owning up to it.

it'd be nice if you had to give a comment for a one or two or nine or ten, but this may be asking too much from our voters, or it would be in place.

I would rather have the critical comments to see why people think poorly of my photographs, (in a constructive manner, as I don't pay attention to the rude ones, which have been very few in number).

Both of mine are under 5 this week so far and will likely remain so. I keep thinking I am doing better, and my scores keep going down..., partly because I too am trying some things I think that are more creative and artistic than the general voter seems to prefer, and sometimes it's cause I submit a photo one minute before the deadline and I have not checked it well for post-processing problems.

That's exactly where I have ended up. I will vote on all the photos, then I proceed to the CC area where I leave detailed critiques on as many photos as I have time for (5-8 per week). I think one good critique is better than 5-10 short comments.
