I know I do not have a coorect lense for macros, but the shots seem so clear and focused in the cam. They then turn out with out much detail. Is this just due to lack of lense, or something else? This is the latest, no that much of a close up, but I think you see what I mean. The body is meant to be blured, the head is more what I am talking about. Maybe I am getting my cam to close? Maybe I should try not in Macro mode and be a bit back from the subect? hmmmmmm

What would be a nice Macro lense for a 300D that wont cost an arm and a leg? 'TIA! =)

lol. I should have posted my mantis photo in this thread instead of starting another. I don't have a macro lens either. The detail seems alright on this one but I know what you mean about the larger sizes. My shot suffers from similar problems. Wish I had a 300D though. :)

Mike, how did you get the mantis to pose so elegantly for you? Don't worry about the lack of detail, most of that is because of jpeg compression.
Try using the highest quality or even a 'raw' image setting to preserve more image detail.

EDIT: looking at the shot here you cant really see what I mean, the pic is tooo small. I will up load larger.

maybe I'm not too familiar with that model of camera.. but it has an optical viewfinder, yes? i guess maybe you need to use a depth of field preview when looking at the subject.. could explain why it focuses nice in the camera but not the final result..
?

I have the same problem when lookin at the pic in the LCD, most of my macros looks terrible out of the camera, i had tried everything but macro lens ($$$$$$), i have a some in my portfolio and pbase (links below), but the most important thing i have learn (ok, i know i´m far and away from being Jacko) is that you need 3 important things:
1 Light (much of it)
2 Small apperture (f10 or higher)
3 And a tripod.

What lens did you use?

I have a cheap sigma 80mm macro and it's actually really sharp for the price, and gets in nice and close. Alternatively try a reversed lens on front, both give cool results.

macro lens at 80mm.

100mm with reversed 50mm or so... mighta been closer to 28?

I held the Mantis cupped in my hands for about 5 min, it was dark and I guess it felt secure, not sure. Anyway, after the I just let him crawl out and onto the Stamp (that's a "paid" stamp he is standing on). He then just sat there for a while and started cleaning. It was cool to see. I have not thought about RAW. Actually forgot I had it ;)

That is nice detail with the 80mm Sigma. Will have to check one out. I was looking at the 105 (I think it was) but I am not sure I want to spend $500+ right now.

JPR: That is a cool shot, I love the dark eyes on that one. We do not have those here like that.
