I was recently using my D70 with a Nikkor 80-200mm lens, when the lens simply fell off, pulling the lens mount with it. It appears that the screws on the lens mount just stripped out. This appears to be a defect in workmanship. I have received comments from another forum that several owners of this camera have noticed significant play in the lens mount.

I did talk to a Nikon tech rep who stated "I have never heard of that happening before..." Naturally, I was not surprised by that response. He told me that perhaps I turned too quickly, causing it to come off. Also, if I dropped it, the warranty would not cover it. It sounds to me like they are already trying to find a reason not to cover it under warranty. He asked if the lens was still under warranty, which it is. However, I reminded him that if there was lens damage, it was a result of a defect in the camera. So, I will send it in and see what happens.
But I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem.

I haven't had any problems with mine, and I change my lenses all the time.

I pick my camera up by the lens most of the time. Especially when removing it from the camera bag.

One time I went to pick it up and the lens just released from the camera. I'm 100% certain it was the way I had put the lens back on. Since I had just taken it off a few minutes prior. It looked like I had attached it correctly, so I have no clue what went wrong.

After the one fall off, it's stayed on since.

Unfortunately, this didn't happen while changing lenses. The entire lens mount came off the camera, still attached to the lens.

Sounds like you were just unlucky and got a defected one. How long have you had it? Can you just exchange it? I would think Nikon will be pretty good about taking care of you. You might try working directly through Nikon, rather than a local rep. You might get better service.

This is really bad. I just checked the lens mount on my camera, and there is no play at all. Also, I already had my old manual 300/4.5 on it, which is huge and heavy, and I held only the camera for a moment or two without any problems.

I'm pretty sure that they will replace it. I believe that the first-level tech reps always answer "I have never heard that that happens ... must have been your fault", no matter what the problem is or how many people have it. So don't worry too much, I'm sure Nikon will take care of that. Please keep us posted, though.

i've never had a problem with mine either. in fact i just looked at it, and all is tight on there. definitely sounds like a defect, like you said. they should cover that for you under warranty. how long have you had the camera? the shop you bought it from might've been able to swap it out for you depending on how long ago you bought it.

good luck, let us know what happens, i'm curious to hear what nikon does for you.

I bought the camera in April from Wolf Camera in Houston. I talked to them and they offered to send it in for me, but did not offer to exchange it.
