Hey guys,
I had some troublemaker(s) break in to my appartment and steal my camera equipment, stuff worth close to 10k. I got the police here asap they took a report and told me that my stuff was gone and almost zero chance of me getting it back.

Now my next step is to contact the insurance company. I have receipts for about half of my stuff, some I bought in iceland where I used to live (live in California now) and some I bought used from places like craigslist and camera forums. I have never dealt with the insurance company in the states before so any help would be appreciated.

I'm only trying to get my stuff back, I've heard so many horror stories about the insurance companies screwing people out of the money they should be getting so I just want some advice.

Anything you could tell me is appreciated. Thank you guys

I had a similar problem. I was able to convince the insurance company by using the original box for one lense as evidence or proof of ownership, this did surprise me but it was something they suggested!

Sorry to hear about your stuff. It's horrible. I don't know if this site can help. You have a list of equipment on your profile page. Maybe Langdon can send a copy of the dates that the equipment was added to the site proving you owned it before the theft. Just a thought!

Iceland to California now that's a move! I'm hoping to get to Iceland this spring!

Is there an outside chance you registered your equipment in your Canon Registration Account?

I would not bet my shirt on this, but I seem to recall that you can only register items on that site if you are a US citizen and the items were purchased in the USA.

Assuming that all of your equipment was identified in your profile, you could provide them with that list, and a link to the costs associated with replacing these items.

I have mine covered under my house insurance and the nice part is that I am insured for the "Replacement" cost.

The best of luck to you.

you should only need serial numbers.

Thank you all for your help, I have contacted my insurance company and what a surprise it was. I had zero problems. Everything is paid in full. All they wanted was proof of ownership through receipts, boxes, serials or even pictures of me using the equipment and thankfully I could provide those. So now I'm just going to go out and buy my life back:D I felt handicapped with my stuff gone.
