I finally got a chance to use the books module in LR 5 to publish a book on Blurb. In the past I've used booksmart, which is very good, but has the disadvantage of making you generate a set of JPEGs of the photos and then importing them into Booksmart in order to build the book.

It took a while to get used to LR's page layout--Booksmart is a lot better in this regard--but for simple layouts, LR5 is fine. And it's great to be able to go back to your original RAW and tweak it as necessary as you are developing the book.

The real problem is, however, uploading to Blurb. It works...if you have 5 hours or so to spare for a 200 photo book. And in several cases, it just seemed to hang at 81%, waiting for the Blurb server. But worse than that, if you need to make any changes after uploading, you are stuck uploading the book completely, as a new book. I was finished and then I noticed an extra space in the title on the cover. Back to square 0, uploading again.

And to make matters worse, I wanted to have both a softcover and hardcover book option. Well with Lightroom, you have to pick before you upload, and there's no way to have the book in your bookstore with both options. So you have to change the cover type, reupload, and then have both books in your store. Argh.

Maybe next time I'll go back to Booksmart. Though probably not. I'll just learn to live within the limitations.

You can see the book I created, from my trip to Marble and Grand Canyon with Road Scholar, in my Blurb store. (It's really intended mainly for people on the trip with me...there's no descriptive text!!!!)

(Edited to point to new book.)

Argh...had to reupload ALL THREE books to fix a typo on the cover page. Just did it when my computer had a few hours to spare for each one, the final one last night when I went to bed.

We bought the hat at Zion, our first stop. Loved it--doesn't get in the way of shooting.

But do you have a stylish harness to complete the geekdom? ;)

great photography, a shame about the workflow. i've always preferred to do my books in InDesign, just because it offers so much more control over the process. sure, there's some learning curve, but between blurb's killer InDesign plugin and all the online resources, i've been a lot happier with the workflow and results than i ever was with any of the book builder tools. just my 02.
