i guess this is more of a question for drew & langdon -

i was wondering if you guys had hard statistics on the number of votes that get thrown out each week when you run the script on the site. i know you guys said that you had a script that you run shortly before the challenge voting period is over, to eliminate sway votes or whatever the script really looks for.

i'm just curious to know how many votes it actually gets rid of.

I''m a beginner - could you explain what a script is? Does it have to do with votes that are changed after threads that discuss specific photos during the challenge?
There have been at least 4 that I know of.

The script in question is a program that goes through all of the votes cast and tosses out the votes of people who have voted on less than 20 or 20% (I forget) of the submissions. D & L do this to reduce the impact of cyber-trolls (people who vote/comment/post just to screw things up) on the voting results.

I think it's less than 20% (which is why you get that red notice when you've voted on <20%). And they also throw out if someone's voted all ones, or more than 50% ones, or somesuch.

Lisa, your thread(well actually deer guys thread)has been hysterical, but what will wind up happening?
Will the discussed photos get thrown out?
I couldn't care less as far as it effecting my scores,
but just as something that might get worse.
There were many this week. I don't know if that normally happens, but I know that I personally went back in and changed some scores. I didn't think about it at the time. Changing comments is not a big deal(I did it with yours), but changing scores is.

At the end of voting, a program is run that looks at the voting patterns of each user. If a voter''s pattern suggests they were trying to disrupt the voting process rather that provide honest opinions, their votes are ignored. This is based strictly on predefined patterns. For example, if a user were to score one photo a 10 and all the rest ones, those votes would be ignored.

As another user noted, you must vote on at least 20% of the photos in a challenge before your votes are counted. This is not handled by that script, however; you must vote on 20% of the photos before your votes are included in any totals.

Clubjuggle knows everything! :-)

So, if I go through and vote on 19% of the pictures, my ratings aren't reflected in the photographer's scores?

Terry,

At this time the discussion threads have no effect on the scripts. The scrips are automated and predefined, and look at overall vote patterns and not which scores were changed. I do believe, however, that we need to come up with a more-or-less "official" position on discussion of photos as I am well aware that some people see benefit to such discussion while others are uncomfotable with the practice.

Exactly. I discovered this when one Monday morning, shortly after midnight, I went to "My Home" to discover that I had one comment and zero votes.

Yes, but you'll see a red note on your voting page and 'my home' page that says something to the effect of "you need to vote on 20% of the entries before your votes are calculated."

Clubjuggle does in fact know all :) Votes aren't counted until you vote on 20%. Ten or so minutes before the end of the challenge, sway votes are ignored based on a predetermined algorithm. This usually affects about 5 users of 300+ voting.

the script usually reduces the number of votes i have on my photo by between 6 and 10 votes. so far, my overall score has gone up afterwards so i'm certainly not complaining. :)
