I have 24 comments so far on my photo this week. 20 of them are praise with scores listed of 8, 9 and 10s. Two of the comments do not find texture in my shot. - But my average score is in the toilet. Where are all the criticism comments that will help me understand where my photo is inadequate to many viewers?

I'll let you borrow some of my critical comments. I've got PLENTY this week!

Thanks Welcher, --- My arm is sore from patting myself on the back for this weeks shot, but knobody else seems to like it, I wish I knew where it falls short.

Hey Gotcha,

I'm in the same boat. Probably one of my favorites so far, but lowest score ever.

Oh well :-)

Mine was my favorite, but I've already tried implimenting a fix for the criticism I've been receiving over and over (and over) again, and I think it may be a little better, though I still think the original is better than the score.

Funny thing is, I tried about 6 different crops on this one, and the one suggested in my comments never even entered my mind. Which is the purpose of this site, I guess.

I started out strong, but I am dropping rapidly. I have 20 comments, mostly high praise, so I am in the same boat as the rest of you. This is nothing new to me...

Could it be your photo is politically incorrect?

This is my first time with a submision (I voted on the free study and fear) and although I worked really hard on capturing the shot, my score is rather lame.

Also, I was expecting lots more comments (11 so far) and a lot more criticism (only 3) since my photo does resemble one from an earlier challenge. Silly me, I didn't think to review the archives of past submissions first...wound up looking like a copy cat ' - ) However, only one comment on the lack of originality...and one viewer felt (and said so) that it was very original.

And is it "normal" for ones score to go down after the first couple of days? Whenever I reconsider votes it's to bump them up, not down.

I dont think it has anything political in it at all.
Everyone...., Go back and look at it,.... Give it a 10.

10 comments. Bummer, I must have a really boring photo this week. :-)
07/25/2002 11:40:10 AM · #11
Out of those 10 comments, is there a really useful one? That's really what counts.
07/25/2002 11:46:05 AM · #12
Hmmm, I don''t know if any of mine are useful -- but I love the one that slams me for having done something I didn''t actually do. I take it as a huge compliment. In fact, I take it as more of a compliment than any of the complimentary ones. :-)

My favorites are the ones that totally contradict the other ones. To much texture, and not enough texture. Sharpen more, sharpen less. The list goes on really... and leaves me the confused beginner I was when I started.

David -- I've noticed on several of your posts you keep mentioning political correctness/incorrectnes. I strive to be a politically incorrect as possible, but what the HECK are you talking about.

(Please note, tone of voice/facial expressions are lost on this medium. I am not "attacking" you, I just sincerely want to know why you keep bringing it up.)

I would assume he is brining it up because many people get excited about such things and would not be professional and score based on the shot.... next week should be interesting.

On a beginners site like this that is open to the entire web for voting (not just other photographers or even super experienced photographers) you can't put too much faith in the comments positively or negatively.

I know that sounds weird and maybe youmight ask yourself "why even come here to learn if the majority of the time you don't get good information?".

I answer its a lot like college.

You have to take a lot of courses that have nothing to do with your major to get to the ones that you do learn a lot in. Same here. You have to wade through a lot of stuff to find comments and people who will help you. Just don't let the negative bum you out and you will find a nice return here :-)

This happens to me every week. In another thread it was mentioned that a person's votes don't appear until they've voted on 20%. I think there's a group of people who get to that point faster and they tend to vote higher. Then when the grumps get to the 20% figure my scores go down.

Also, I've stopped trying to predict what will 'sell' here and just take the best shot I can. No matter what I do I get comments that range from 'It's wonderful, I wouldn't change a thing' to 'This is a piece of unmitigated trash'. To those who leave constructive comments, thank you, they are acted upon. To those who just slash my pride and joy, I'm sorry, it must be sad to be living such a narrow life.

My shot has some nice points but also some great flaws and 13 of the 15 comments have given detailed discription of whats wrong and some have had good suggestions on how to fix it. This has been the most constructive session I have yet had.

And it's all on my own head because I knew it was wrong but I decided I didn't want to submit a wallpaper. My Bad.

Even with a better camera I've got a long way to go.

Well this makes me feel better... I thought I had a really awesome "sure-fire winner" (of course I'm biased) for this week, and most of my 29 comments are praising it (except the 2 from ppl that just didn't seem to get one aspect of it). I have lots of "9s" and "10s" in the comments, yet my avg score certainly doesn't reflect that. It'd be nice to know why ppl are giving me "1s". I guess if everyone else is seeing the same, then maybe my pic isn't doing as bad as I thought!

I dont post all that often but this week I got the most comments of all, must be that new rule :D

I'm shocked to see some praises from people here that are great photographers, makes me feel a bit better. I dont have a properly calibrated monitor so I took a gamble with my exposure and it worked out, for the most part. I did get some comments about the exposure but that is to be expected, I think about 20% of the people that vote have properly calibrated monitors. A grey scale bar at the bottom of the page may help with some basic config.

So far looking at the averages this will be my best challenge. If the averages are close to previous weeks I should be in the top half, foreign grounds for me LOL.

So far the 15 comments I have on mine are pretty positive, but my score is hovering at around 5.145.. :-( It would be great to hear honest feedback from those who are voting low. I really do want to improve and good critique is sure to help. For all you who score low, c'mon, have a heart and tell us what you see or don't see.

Show some teeth...don't show any teeth...show some teeth but make sure it's completely tactful...you people are exhausting!

Gotcha, I know exactly what photo you're referring to from your description...I'll go back and 'show some teeth' if you take some of the heat on the other thread for discussing your submission prematurely...<grin>

$50.00 bucks says you don't have a clue which one is mine.

Hmmm...no kidding. I was being facetious. I love a good bet though. Maybe I'll take a shot at it. I'll get back to you on that. Would 'a clue' mean that I could narrow it down to 3 possibilities?

I'll give you 10 trys - If you loose, you owe me $1.00 per attempt up to 10. now thats confidence, or "Pinache" - (i think is my vocabulary word for this week).
