Maybe Flickr isn't my answer, I'm open to other suggestions....

I finished my project of scanning all of my family's slides, dating back to 1962. I have them all sorted in to folders by year, and some of the years have subfolders of subject matter. There are several thousand photos. I've burned them to DVD and given DVDs to family members, but I want to put them all online in a gallery for them for quicker access. I'd like to keep the folder structure, and preferably just upload them like that, without having to manually recreate the structure.

I've dabble with Flickr for my own stuff, and I've set up a new account for these picture, but I can't figure out if I can just do a massive folder upload. Does anyone know if that's possible? If not in Flickr, any other web gallery app with free space? I'm not necessarily wedded to Flickr. I could just stick them all up on Dropbox, but then there would be no gallery.

Any insight?

I've just been messing about with dropbox and flickr trying to offload media from my phone which had run out of space.

I tried flickr, but couldn't find an easy way to create folders from the ios app - Also, Flickr doesn't accept videos, which I needed to upload. I ended up uploading my stuff to Google Drive - It's fine, but the main thing that puts me off is that people have to have gmail accounts to access it (as far as I know?)

You can download the Desktop Flickr Uploadr where you can add as many files at a time as you like. You would need to create the sets you want for the subfolders, but you can do that for a selection of pictures, or pre-create them on the website, and load them into the sets.

Maybe the ios app doesn't allow you to upload video (I don't know if it does or not), but Flickr has certainly supported it for a few years now.

You can definitely do what alohadave said, I would create collections for each year and the sets for each collection first and then do your mass upload via the uploader.

I've investigated this, and it turns out that yes; Flickr does accept video, but no; the iOS Flickr app won't allow you upload video! //www.flickr.com/groups/flickrapp/discuss/72157632303302006/

If you use Lightroom it has the ability to upload automatically and keep the folder structure into Flickr or a other sites.

I do love your question, though. I do not think there are any Flickr power users as the interface and web page organization is so poorly designed. I have to google how to do things that I have done dozens of time because the menus are wither hidden, illogical, or only available in ceratin places. I only continue to use it as I am too lazy to research other sites.

Skydrive will work like dropbox, but you will get a nice photoviewer.

After a lot of account creating and file copying, here's my review after a quick look at each:

Flickr: Tons of free space (1TB!), and really nice gallery presentation. It doesn't fit my needs for the project I'm working on, because it really doesn't allow for my folder structure. Download files seems to be a wonky process, too. I'll skip Flickr for this project.

Dropbox: 2GB of free space. The files I have now (1.92GB) will fit, but I would have no room to add more, without doing referrals or buying some. The gallery is nice, and I can do the folder structure I want. Within the folder structure, the thumbnails are tiny, but the gallery view is very nice. Navigation and downloading are very easy. You need to use the desktop app to upload your existing folder structure. I'll skip Dropbox for this project.

Amazon CloudDrive: 5GB of free space. All my current files for this project will fit, with some room for expansion. Using the desktop app, you can upload your existing folder structure. The thumbnails are a not very big. Downloading a folder requires checking a box and then selecting to download. Right clicking a picture will let you save it, but the file name they offer is different than the file (why?). You can click a download button in full picture view, and it will save it with the original name. I'll skip Amazon for this project.

Microsoft Skydrive:
7GB of free space (that's very nice). All my current files for this project will fit, with some room for expansion. Using the desktop app, you can upload your existing folder structure. The thumbnails in folder view and gallery view are a decent size. Navigation is easy, downloading with a right click is easy. My family should be able to use this.

Google Drive:
: 15GB of free space! All my current files for this project will fit, with lots of room for expansion. Using the desktop app, you can upload your existing folder structure. The thumbnails in folder view and gallery view are a decent size. Navigation is easy, downloading with a right click is easy. It is very similar to Skydrive. My family should be able to use this, and I think this may be the way I go, mainly because of the 15GB of space.
