To me many of the entrants misunderstood the challenge description that light and shadow vie with each other for attention or misinterpreted how I envisioned it. I wanted light and shadow to fight with each other for attention, each one trying hard to draw the viewers eye as being the dominant force and form in the image. Even the voters have clearly not grasped this in essence. Half of the top 10 images have light and shadow living in total harmony with each other. They don't compete for attention.

I decided to take an ontological approach to the challenge description.

Most people don't read the challenge description!

They should though...it's such an integral part.

It could be argued that Light & Shadow are always at war, even when they seem to be balanced.

Also, it is possible to shoot for the challenge description but not always possible to vote for it. It is likely that people are more influenced by what they like when voting. I know I am. I trust the photographer to follow the challenge. If I see an image & can't figure out how it meets the challenge, I do not vote it down because of that.

Just as one example, if I look at your image & try to describe it I would say 'using the light to get a nice shadow of the glass.' My interest was caught & held by the shadow.

So now I'm wondering how you would describe light & shadow vieing for my attention in your image?

As I said...it's how I envision it. In my own image I feel both elements are represented in an almost equally strong way but it's also slightly different because it's not the classic object/shadow image represented by a solid object that let's no light through at all. I used the glass because it lets light through yet throws a shadow and played on the effect of the lettering and the angle of the sunlight to create something a bit artistic while still having a clearly discernible shadow and clearly discernible glass with the reflections of light visible in both the glass and the shadow thereof. Both the shadow and the glass itself compete for attention, at least that's how I experience it.
