Or maybe just have fun with the challenges....that's an option too.

Poor Langdon.
He was only listening to suggestions made.

One can choose to withdraw in protest but the downside is that that it hurts the community. There has been a downward spiral already with participation, votes, discussions on the forums - and it is happening in chunks, in a haphazard movement with no conformity of unified movement.

It is not sending a message. Well it is, in that people are more and more dissatisfied with the site BECAUSE of the low participation in challenge, low voting and less discussion of photography topics AND that is ON TOP of the dissatisfaction with the management of the site.

This is not *just* a simple restaurant where you can take your business elsewhere without a huge impact on the community. There is a community that has people respond to help others here in photography (all those help topics) and in life (think Sherpet, docpjv, SDW to name a few).

Make no mistake I am not advocating being passive on this issue - I just want to point out that what you are suggesting Mike has already been going on and it hasn't really worked. Thoughts on how else to resolve this current status well that is ongoing...

Oh and I do want to point out a pattern.

All challenges that have been chosen in the past two weeks I have noticed are in the top 7 suggestions on the forum thread when Langdon is on. So, sort term solution awash or bump suggestions you would rather have to the top of the list 2 hours before rollover.

interesting. so he doesn't read our responses, only the topics?

so basically he is completely out of touch with what we want or dont want.

Yes, and no. Think about this try to balance your schedule that has a full work day (and possibly the overtime given the nature of his line of work), a wife and two *young* children, and then a website you created. All scream for your attention - all are your responsibilites, all need your attention. How much time can you give to them? You want to stay connect to all of them so how do you balance and measure your time that you can give to all?

My thoughts - Langdon comes on and checks what it on the top of the suggestion list - *OUR LISTS* of suggestions I may point out. And then makes the choice with what time he does have to post here.

This is a partnership that will work only if *both* community and management work in sync with each other. It either one doesn't then the result is what you see here: a continued downward spiral.

EDIT to add: and the more I think of it after getting over my disappointment on the current choice and try to figure out why...on a technical standpoint of photography - waterdrops are hard to do and it would be a challenging technique to do.

please. i work 40+hrs a week, wife, two kids, i go to school and i do portrait photography on the side and i still am able to spend time here and find time to shoot for myself

if he isn't up to the task, he ought to delegate the responsibility, preferably to someone who cares.

fwiw, the community is trying, but management inst listening, in fact he doesn't even seem to care that people are leaving in droves.

If the human body was the same for ALL people across the board then Doctors would not have any trouble diagnosing and treating there patients. What I am trying to say Mike is that it is great that you have currently managed a balance but it doesn't happen all across the board for everyone. But even you can acknowledge your balance gets out of wack sometimes - think of the times you had the finals, the sick kids, etc.

Now I do agree with you on one point. I'd love for Langdon to have someone who could help run the place, but that means he has to find the time to find and research someone who would be a good fit for that role. We as the community would not want someone come in that would radically change the place OR do a hostile takeover....I'm thinking of another community where that did happen several years ago.

In my experience with DPC, this is over generous. I've never felt Langdon's presence on this site. All we are really asking for are some minor adjustments.

...or some support. What gets rewarded gets done. How much rewarding has Langdon received in the past year? (and before you go there, money is not necessarily rewarding...)

If Langdon instantly responded to your every complaint, to your satisfaction, I expect you would still be able to find things to complain about, object to, find the flaws in. If I left this site it would not be because of the challenge topics, or because Langdon isn't paying enough attention to me, it would be because of destructive threads like this one.
07/01/2013 09:59:20 AM · #23
I just think this is Langdon's way of telling Cory and MAK to hurry up with TPL-2 so the good topics can start again :)
07/01/2013 10:13:47 AM · #24
My thought on the topics of late have not been my favorite either, but as photographers we should be forced to reach outside our comfort zone and take images of subjects that we normally wouldn't explore otherwise, how are we going to grow.

If you want to take portraits and landscapes all the time then your probably on the wrong site to begin with, hence the name "challenge". I believe it has become a double meaning other than the obvious, its like doing the 10 page essay that you dread but has to be completed, and once done you look back at it and say WOW I wrote that. I think the same can hold true for photography.

Yeah the trolls running around and screwing up our scores and the topics failing to meet everyone's expectations SUCKS but, what I think sucks worse than that is all the BS of complainers, quitters, nay sayers, and fun suckers on this site. It takes the fun away and makes me so OMG whats he/she bitching about now!!!! We have to be diverse in the community otherwise were nothing more than a pool of amoeba with cameras taking pictures of the same thing!!

Ok Im done off to my coffee :)

Can't think of much that is more challenging than trying to take a unique photo of a subject that was huge a few years back. What can you possibly do to make it different and not the same old thing? Therein lies the challenge.
