As you'll see on your "My Home" page, our vote counts and vote averages are now updated hourly instead of real-time. Any of you who've ever gotten a time-out on the front page can attest to how hard that constantly hit our database. We're not trying to ruin anyone's addiction, we're just trying to keep the site as fast as possible!

We know there've been some major slowdowns on the site, and I can assure you we have been and continue working to fully optimize the site. The change over the past two weeks has been gradual, but I can assure you that the performance of the site has increased drastically. We're working on optimizing photographer profiles, the voting interface, and the forums -- which we think will put our server strain back down to a reasonable level :)

Let us know if you've had any problems with features on the site that you'd like us to look into. Thanks as always for your patience.

One thing I'd like which may help site performance is if the link to the commenter on the vote results page linked directly to the PM pop-up; I think it's rare we NEED to go to the commenter's profile page before responding to the comment.

Also think you should post warnings/instructions when you do things like change the "LinkTo" button or add the "Insert Picture" button; maybe before they're implemented.

For all of you who were having difficulties loading your voting thumbnails page, we've greatly optimized it. It should load significantly faster for you. We'll be working on cutting down the file size of the page shortly as well, as that's the only slowdown right now (dependent on your connection).

Drew - Are there any plans to optimize the boards? I've cut way back on reading them, since they are incredibly slow for me. (It can take two minutes to load a thread.) Or am I the only one with this problem?

Yesterday I finished voting. This ev went back to add comments to those votes I had not given a comment to yet. Actually, that was a good intention as I had a much fresher look on things. However, the loading was incredibly slow. After 4-6 comments I stopped. It might have helped if the user could specify "show me only pictures I have not commented on" or "have not voted on". (Will still go back for some final vote tweaking but the suggested option would have helped speeding up adding comments and changing a vote here and there).

The optimization we made last night should definitely help that problem. But, yes, we'll be adding new 'views' to your voting gateway page. It's a very good idea. Give us a week or two on that, though.

Journey,

Drew and I were talking about a way to streamline commenting last night and it's been added to the task manager. It'll probably be a few weeks till that gets started though.
