After being frustrated with the harshness of the (remarkably powerful) pop-up flash on my D100, I started fooling around with diffusing the flash, and stumbled on a makeshift solution that seems to work pretty well, and should for any pop-up flash that stays popped-up.
I call it the "Chickenhead" diffuser, because, well honestly, it looks like a chicken head. It is the corner of a white plastic grocery bag, cut diagonally...
These photos taken with a Sony DSC-F717, which I have zero experience with.
Then, when I am going to need diffusion, I just use a rubber band to affix it to the popped-up flash...
This works for close range (say up to 8 feet or so), but may go a little longer if you bump up the flash EV.
Now I admit it ain't pretty, especially when attach it to around 3 grand in basic camera equipment. But... We're interested in functionality, right?

I had heard of tissue in front of the flash, attached by wrapping the tissue all the way around, and afixing with tape, but that seems more burdensome to me. Pretty quick and easy to place a hood on the flash! Nice going! |

I forgot to mention that, at least on my cam, it folds up small enough to get stuffed into the battery compartment (of my vertical grip, between the two batts).

Great post mjcecil.
I've done something simular with mine. My Safeway has little 'tissue' dispensers in the bakery section. The tissues are usually white but can sometimes be blue. (gives a little blue tint with some shots)
When I buy rolls I just help myself to a few extra 'tissues' for my camera bag. They're about 4"x4" |

You are right, this is actually a known trick - but a pretty damn clever one nonetheless.
Just... When you use this trick, make sure to always fire a preflash - I dunno how to do it on the D100, but on the D60/30, press the little star button. That sends of a flash in low strength, analyses the light pattern, and adjusts (increases, most likely) the flash output. That way, the exposure will be good, because the camera dooesn`t even realise you stuck something over the flash.
If you want to see how preflash works, go to your nearest mirror. Zoom in on your flash, and take a picture. Then, do a preflash, and take another picture
The first picture will be a white mess of overexposedness. The second picture should give you a beautifully rendered picture of your flash.
