Hi all

As many of you know, I'm new to photography and therefore still very unknowledgable about lots of things. I've been contacting various organisations with the invitation to take photos for certain events (unpaid and to provide images for their websites etc), simply as a way to expand my experience and repertoire.

I'm possibly going to be attending a graduation event at a local university, with the intention to take informal photos around the room during the night. The idea is to be unintrusive and to capture people mid conversation/laughing etc. I.e. I won't be a formal photographer and the attendees shouldn't really notice that I'm there taking shots (insofar as is possible).

However, I'm mindful that the opportunity may arise that some people may want me to take a photo and provide it to them privately after the event. I would of course seek to charge a small fee for the digital file!

Although I'm not expecting it to happen, I want to be prepared for the possibility that people may want to pay for a copy of certain images.

My initial thought was to set up a Flickr account which the organisations could link to, and view the images there. That would allow me to set the copywrite settings so that people couldn't simply copy and paste the images (watermark is another idea). If people wanted to buy a copy, they could contact me through an email address? I think that advertising images for sale on Flickr is banned, so not sure what to do to get around this.

I don't have a website (because I know nothing about running a website, and there seems little point without having the content in the first place)... so not sure what to do.

Can anybody offer any suggestions?

Thanks

Al

make sure you have cards or something ahead of time to give to the potential clients so that they know where to look for the images.

here's some ideas about shooting graduations, although it is geared towards handling the hand-offs.

as mike pointed out, get some business cards. right now, overnightprints.com has a great deal going. i love them! great prices, great products, great customer service!

good luck, and have fun!

Reading your post clearly two things come to my mind:

You are clearly unprepared for what you are going to do

As long as you take money for it you must act as a seasoned pro, thus having the same degree of responsability.

I would be worried with a lot of stuff if I where you. For example if you want to take photos withought being noticed you need a tele of at least 200mm. Do you have it.

Why do you want to take photos of events instead of people you know, or aspiring models to practice, where you can moderate the expectations of people seeing the photos.

Putting out photos of your "triaining" oportunities can kill any chance of being able to work as a pro and being taken seriously if the quality isn`t up to the standards.

If you gota free pass just keep the photos for yourself unless the quality is good enough and you see yourself paying for it.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys.

Nuno - It's completely informal and I basically have a pass to walk round the crowd and take whatever snaps I want, and there's no obligation to submit the images afterwards. I'm basically approaching the situation as good practice without any potential risk of failure.

I'm just wondering about the potential to sell any that would be up to scratch, and the best way to go about it.

Cheers

is the "client" aware that you will be soliciting the guests during the evening? its one thing to be snapping photos during the event, its another to be informing the guests that you are attempting to sell them something.
