You're right, that is a very nice, concise, FRIENDLY way of saying something that often draws battle lines among photographers of all types. I wish I'd seen this 7 years ago!

I'm in a different profession. This article has important points to apply accordingly.

cheers to that!

Great find Skip, and thanks for sharing.
I'm definitely in the left-hand column, and actually did a photoshoot over two days this weekend that proves that.
4 hours of time, plus cost of prints to use in a 4-generation family picture, travel, etc and I didn't charge them a dime as it was for the closest thing to family that i have in this city.

I'm definitely in the right hand column, i love advertising, i love setting up shoots, i love the time spending shooting and loading up my schedule, i love shooting and processing and i really love when the clients are happy.

I was on the left-hand side when it was still possible to earn a living that way. As the business slanted more and more to the right side, I started to burn out. I was never good at all the "business" stuff, especially self-promotion, and eventually I sold the business to my assistant and moved on.

I think there is still some room on the left - thing is you really do have to do some promotion and go for big $$ fine art rather than targeting the typical portrait/architecture/stock market.

Funny enough, I think the promotion in that market matters more than the content. (content still matters, kinda anyway)

I wish I'd have seen this yesterday. I wonder if my boss will give me my job back?

Interesting and educational. Or, could also read as 'please stop diluting the market because you're making it harder for me!'.

It's like a Doctor telling aspiring Doctors not to bother because it means there is too much treatment, reducing the price.

In the 1970s there was quite a scandal when it was discovered that the California Board of Dentistry was falsifying the scores of out-of-state dentists taking the licensing examination to practice in California, presumably to reduce the competition ...

Good one Skip!!

I owned a leather manufacturing co some years ago, the biggest prob with being self employed for me was turning friends down for that "cut rate" friend discount, just need a little thing made... THAT takes 100x more effort n material ... BUT, do it for one and you'll be doing it for friends of friends as well!! Lesson, learned that applies to photography!

Thank goodness I don't have to make a living (at least right now) doing photography, but I do shoot for people and I set my prices where I make a fair wage. One lady contacted me last year about Senior shots, I quoted my price, but then the kids Aunt bought a camera and was A PHOTOGRAPHER so I lost the job... Well I lost the job Until the Aunt tried to sell them the horrible pictures. LOL The mother called me back and set up a new shoot and paid my prices with no complaining!

This area EVERYONE who owns a point n shoot is a pro-photographer!!

sometimes free is good, i put out ad on craigslist add to help expand my couples portfolio, a lady contacted that she want to get some pictures taken with her fiance, they are making a save the date website and just want some good pictures on it.

i took them out and gave them about 12-15 digital images to have and she was ecstatic with the results, now she is setting up a paid shoot to get formal engagement shots plus the word of mouth she will give is better than any paid advertising i could hope for, plus i got great shots of an attractive couple to highlight on facebook and the website.

so free is bad when its charity (family/friends), free is good when its beneficial to you and opens up new avenues.

It ain't a local phenomenon, Katie!

Thanks for the link, Skip. I'm sorta straddling the two columns, but the pie chart on the right is closer to what I actually do!
