I recently acquired the canon 5dmkii & 600 ex rt flash through a friend of mine, and I had questions about how to use the flash off the body? Do I need the transmitter or are there other options (pocket wizards, ect.)?

Here is an old thread on remote triggers.
The cheaper triggers will limit your ETTL. With the controls in the 5mk2 and the capabilities of the 600, staying Canon would be tempting. I bought cheap triggers and flashes and am used to manual control, which works fine; however there are times i wish i could dial up and down my flash heads from the menu on my camera.

you could always go the old fashion way and use sync cords.
