Anyone have any idea what kind of bird this is? According to my Stoke's Field Guide ... it looks very similar to a Cormorant of some sort, except those birds aren't supposed to be here in Albany, New York.

I found him in an overflow to the Hudson River (overflow because there are no locks between the ocean and Albany on the Hudson ... so there is still high and low tide here ... but it's fresh water and something like 150 miles from the ocean).

Looks like a cormorant.

Would help if I read the text as well as look at the purty pictures! Anyways, it does indeed look like a cormorant. I found this article that states the number of cormorant are on the increase in NY so it's very likely.

Cormorant. No question about it. Nice photo, it was a no brainer to ID. (We have them all over in the South.)

However, I have no idea what he was doing in the New York area... perhaps he was there on business?

Definitely a cormorant. They have been known to follow fish schools up rivers.

Thanks everyone ... I should call Stoke's and let them know they need to shade in some more of the little habitat map they give :)

Although, in Stokes' defense, it does say for the Double-crested Cormorant, "Most commonly seen cormorant in the east and usually the only one seen well inland."

Thought maybe I found a new species :) Can you get rich for that?
