I was all set to submit sunday night when I remembered about these things called time zones (doh!). Suffice to say, I missed the deadline. Despite the fact that it's the just result of my own stupidity, I would really appreciate it if anyone could find the kindness in their heart to comment on the photo anyways.

here it is

thanks everyone.

I like the composition on this photo quite a bit. The framing is excellent... The textures are very evident as well. Two critiques... 1 - I would prefer a little more even lighting across the surface of the coins. 2 - I can't see any reason or benefit of having anything out of focus. It looks like the quarter caught the sharp focis and everyting else behind it fell slightly outside the depth of field. Your 990 will allow you to operate in aperture priority mode, so a higher F number (smaller aperture) would bring this all into focus. I'm also curious as to why you named it 80 cents?

Great concept with this shot :)

I also agree that the lighing and dof could have been better. I am still trying to figure out this dof thing.

Hey, thanks a bunch for the helpful comments. I actually was shooting with the smallest aperture. the problem was that the coins were propped up against the half dollar, so it was receeding into the background. macro shooting also yields pitifully small dof. I named it 80 cents because I had a total of 80 cents laid out on the table, but then I switched coins and forgot about the value change. Perhaps 85 cents is more like it. I guess it''s a good thing I''m a photog and not a stock broker. I would also be curious to know what vote it would have recieved, if anyone feels like venturing a guess. Thanks again.

focus is on nearest coin which appears very dark on my screen and falls off very quickly on the remaining 2 coins which constitute a large proportion of your image - if I remember right the depth of field is about 1/3 before the point of focus and 2/3 behind so maybe you would have been better off focussing on the 2nd coin with better lighting on the 1st coin. Its a good attempt on a difficult shot with very little DOF to play with - 7
