My burst of color. The challenge description was: Use a colorful impact to offset your subject from the rest of the photograph.

I'm pretty sure I met the challenge well and I even got a couple of great comments and faves (thank you!). Trust me, I never thought this to be a ribbon getter but I did think it would be better received, overall. Please tell me where I went wrong. I'd especially like to hear from those who scored it 4 or less.

I gave it a 5, I like the color of the blue against the grey of the surroundings so I felt it met the challenge it that respect. However it is just a photo of some water bottles and doesn't connect with me emotionally in any way. It's just not a strong enough subject to stand on it's own. Also the composition is lacking as well as perspective.

Can't help you there.

Voted 13 12 entries above yours (DQ was my only 10).
The entries I had above yours had either a wider assortment of colours present, or simply a more interesting subject.

I gave it a 5. It met the topic, and I liked the blue bottles. I didn't think the background added anything significant to the scene, or worked with the bottles, other that to show that these were sitting on a sidewalk awaiting delivery. In a way, it seemed like there were two subjects in the scene and my eye didn't know where to go.

My own approach might have been to work the colorful bottles as an abstract. I'm sure they had plenty of nice texture that could be used. That's actually what I did with a different subject and it didn't come in very much above yours. That's how I expect an abstract to perform, however.

So mine wasn't a 4 or less and there were 12 entries above mine. Wow.
But I guess you're right, my subject wasn't interesting enough. Wider assortment of colors? I didn't know that was a requirement, but okay.

It wasn't, but when it came time to compare entries, yours was lacking that something relative to the rest. Some had better subjects, others had more colour, thus making them more visually appealing. The entries that had more colour just popped a little more. Gave them that little boost.

If I had only voted based on the number of colours then I could understand the malcontent (sorry, it came off that way). Only mentioned it was a factor relative to some of the other entries I placed above yours.

I agree, an abstract might have made a better photo. But I was trying to meet the challenge description and wanted the color to stand out from the bg....plus I like the legs.

Okay thanks for the input.

i'm a big fan of your stuff but this does not have your usual panache or dynamic. water bottles just don't move me. although this is probably too perverse.. i might have liked to see only the top left bottle with the rest of the street as the picture, were that available. but then others would probably vote that down for composition. p.s. i didn't vote.

It needs a duck.

For me it was an issue of not enough of the rest of the frame for the color to be an offset from. There is a bit of action in the rest of the image, but it is pretty marginal.

I think you maybe fell victim to a perception that the image was selectively desaturated in post; it certainly looks like it could have been, though I'm reasonably sure it wasn't. Photoshop desaturation would be seen by many as a "cheap" way to accomplish the challenge, I think.
