Curious to know how you find the focus on that.

Very much looking forward to some first-hand reports on this one. I have to say that this is the first third-party lens in quite a while that has really raised my eyebrows.

So? How is it?

Looking forward to hearing about your hands on and seeing your test shots. Been contemplating between this and the 50mm. Hope you don't have any focusing issues.

No test shots yet, but a calibration test shows that it needs no microadjustment on my 5Dii. So now that I've confirmed focus I'll hopefully get some test shots up today.

^^Thanks!

So I was able to get a good series of shots tonight of my daughter with the Sigma. I'm processing them now and will post in the morning. They were all shot at f2.2, so not completely wide open but not stopped down by any means. I think you guys will seriously like what you're going to see in terms of sharpness.

Here is a 100% crop of her eye with ZERO sharpening applied. This was pulled from a RAW image SOOC.

When you add sharpening, it's a tack.

I guess it depends on how much of the frame the eye took up too. The further away you get from the subject, the harsher the 100% crop is going to be in resolving detail.

You also have to remember that I was shooting a moving target. 6 Month olds don't exactly hold still and let you nail focus. She's moving every microsecond and I was laying on my stomach.

I had the same comment as Giles, I am used to seeing eye shots produced from the 50 and 85, which obviosly will produce more detail in 100 crops. It looks like you missed focus which is easy to do with kids and the 5d2. I'd like to see shots a bit more stopped or wide open in studio setting.

a 100% crop is still a 100% crop though so we are seeing the eye at native size on the raw file etc, out of interest i did a quick test you think babies move fast ry a 4yr old with a toy sword

2.8f 28mm 28-70 L (10 years old) been open 4 times by me and put back together infact its dissambled at mo now as i noticed some dust

A 100% crop is not really a 100% crop under any condition. If you crop an eye of a person standing 10 feet away verse the crop of an eye of a person standing 1 foot away there's been a be a huge difference in image quality.

With that said yours are certainly sharper. That's with sharpness set to 0? Ill take a shot at 1.4 of my wife's eye and compare.

I'm normally not a pixel peeper, but when it comes to sharpness I'm anal. Lol.

Giles' first shot definitely has some sharpening. You can see the line in the white along the edge nest to the lower lid. I can't tell on the rest.

Lightroom automatically applies a sharpening setting of 25 that I think most people don't reduce to 0 during these tests. Not sure if Camera RAW does the same thing or not. Or Aperture--but I assume so.

Does aperture apply a base sharpen upon import? Lightroom does...

My biggest pet peeve about flickr is that it auto sharpens everything. I don't put any of my good stuff on flickr anymore for exactly that reason.
