So my Halloween challenge entry was a new PB for me, with a 5.99. I really thought it would have been a 6. when entering, I didn't feel it was a 6... but I did think it was one of my better pieces. I only thought it would be a six because of the trend while voting, every day it stayed between a 5.8 and 6.4... so I figured I'd get my first 6. WRONG.
anyways... I know there's room for improvement... but looking at the original and then the final result, it thought it turned out good.
and no, I'm not complaining... just wondering what I could have done differently to this pic, if anything.

Hey Denielle! Congrats on a PB and a tiny violin! Go post your achievement over there to let the world know you almost got a 6!! LOL!

I think your shot was very good with the contrasting light and shadow used to create the composition by framing the face! You did a great job in PP to bring out the details and accentuate the highlights while darkening up the shadows. You kept the noise in tbd shadows down and used your expert editing skills to scary it up a little! Awesome work. You got two comments regarding the composition in the challenge, so next time nail that Rule of Thirds and watch your framing in the shot... Too close, too far away. It's all relative!

A 5.99 is nothing to complain about at DPC. It is a good score and something to be proud of. Also being in 17th place in the challenge puts you up there with some of DPC's top talent... Just look at some of the people who placed above and below you! All talented photogs for sure.

I think you did a wonderful job with the shot and don't really see any way to improve it. Your creativity stood out and the processing was well done. Keep doing what you are doing!! You are in the right track!

I think you show great potential, you should try working with artificial light, doesnt have to be a studio strobe or even a speedlight, just get a clamp on work light and a piece of paper and start experienting, you look like you would make an attractive model, start doing some self ports....

EL-ROI, thanks so much! I appreciate the comments and advice. I will post there shortly. :)

smardaz, I used to shoot self portraits all the time. since having my last 2 kiddos, that's been put on hold. LOL
and I know I need to try using artificial light. actually been looking at some DIY lighting setups. :)

Go Denielle. I really liked this shot -- it was in my top ten. Very creepy. I thought it would score over 6. I am not sure I can suggest anything that might take this up a notch. Great job.

I also appreciated the shot. As was already stated, a high-five is not just a form of enthusiastic greeting. Just because it doesn't cross the numbers barrier to six does not mean it is not a deserving image.

Hope all is well.

I just don't understand your location; the odd [in my view] shadows... the pose and pp afterwards are fine, location could be better [i think]

In terms of lighting and processing, you nailed it. (At least for a Halloween challenge).

My quibble is with the big block of black on the left. The way it is now, it places the eye almost dead center, which is not so great here. I think the image would be stronger if the right third were cropped off or, there was more black space surrounding to the left and above...

i gave it a 6, here's my comments:

i liked it a lot, the textures are great. the composition was somewhat lacking, it seems off balance to me, too much negative space on the left, i say probably put it on the right, also its a bit lacking in detail, the eyes especially. in the original i can see they are slightly OOF with explains a lot, and the hair is a bit too much, especially on he right side and draws your eye there away from what should be the focal point, it also covers too much of the face, the original is better in this respect becuase your eye goes to the face and not the hair.

it would almost be better is you could have gotten away with a tighter crop to highlight the eyes more, they should almost always be the focal point, especially creepy ones.

FWIW i think the processing is great and doesn't look overcooked. great stepping stone to bigger and better things.
