Can you please critique this HDR shot from the recent Free Study? I didn't really get any comments to help me understand it's mediocrity!

the composition is very nice, great sun flare but its needs more, either is needs to be whimsical or tack sharp, its just sits in the middle yearning to be a bit more.
if you have a chance, try to redo it and really try to get some sharpness to it. the foreground is a bit blown and lacks real details. |

Thanks. I think you are right. I did pop the exposure on the foreground with a gradient because I exposed for the sky in camera. I think the sharpness is a problem too and It probably has to do with the fact that I shot my brackets handheld and I did not use L glass. There really is a difference in the sharpness with L glass and the EF-S lenses!! No comparison there.

Thank you. I will be revisiting this subject again.

You darkened the sun / did a highlight recovery too hard.
There is a dark halo around the sun..
Otherwise, underexpose - use your histogram, make sure you don't have everything crammed against the right side of the histogram, a spike is fine, but too much means trouble.
Shoot in RAW - frankly, I could have probably gotten close to the same DR, without the strangeness.
Hope that helps.

I think you gave me a few things to think about. Thanks. I will have to watch the highlight/shadows adjustments in the future. Of course I always shoot in raw.
About the strangeness, are you referring to the super saturated contrasty colors?
