Yeah. Always wear a helmet while on a bike, especially while taking photos! 
Or try to get one of those crazy motorcycle dudes that cover the Tour de France so that you can stand up backwards behind him and take pictures. Weeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Yeah, be quick!
Because you can get so close to the cyclists they flash by you very fast compared to standing 50 to 200m away like at a motorcycle race. To pan with such a close distance is very hard. So try to shoot them head on, don't wait until they are near you, especially if your camera has a long shutter lag.
Because there are so many in a tight packed group it is very hard to pick out the ones who you want shots off.
Las week we had the Round of Holland passing by here, but I couldn't get any shots. I stood 50cm (between 1 and 2 feet I believe) from them, way too close.
Just try to make some interesting compositions, wait for the right moments and have a good time.
