So... I used to be known for commenting on every photo... and now I remember WHY I did so.
it forced me to take a longer look at a picture, it helped me to realize the beauty that lies within photographs, it allowed ME the chance to learn and grow and be more visual.
Plus, I know I like receiving comments, even if they aren't always nice. :)

so... I'm making an oath, that beginning with the post apocalyptic challenge, I will comment on 25% of all photos entered into any challenge I vote in.
Anyone else up for it?

My comments are more like wisecracks, but I'm in.

eta: do you need my blood?

Ok, I'm in. I usually vote and comment only in the challenges I enter into.

Currently I have a submission in Negative Space V, and having already voted on 100% of the images, I'll now start commenting.

Have fun!

I usually come close, commenting on 10-100% of the images.

I'm not going to pledge though, as there's probably no better way to ensure that I never comment again. :)

I wish there was more commenting on meh images. (Like all of my entries ever.) I'm guilty of this, too, though. I always comment on the really good ones and sometimes try to offer words of advice on the ones I scored lower, but I very rarely comment on the ones I rate a 5 or 6. I'm not making an official commitment, but I will say that I will try to do better.

Yeah, ok, I'm in. I have to 'cause I've been a real slacker lately.

Ok... I'm resurrecting this thread.

I got a little caught up in things...
Going to try it out again.

I will try and comment on at least 25% of photos on each challenge. :)

Already do, except for the odd challenge that I somehow miss altogether...

Bumping this thread.

I'm going to try commenting on more photos again.

Starting off with challenging myself to comment on at least 10 photographs per challenge. Once school starts for the kids, I'll have a little more free time on my hands. :)

Welcome back Denielle:-)

Bumping this for morning crowd. With things getting busy (and I'm sure that is the case for a great many DPCer's here) I have not had much time to comment.

I think 10 comments per challenge is something easily met. So I'm with you on that score:-)

I actually tried this once quite awhile back - started by commenting on the IMO average shots and saying that was what I was doing. I don't usually check to see whether my comments are marked as helpful or not, but in this case I did - maybe a week later. I was quite distressed by the number that weren't marked - way higher than usual for my comments. I don't want to start the whole "marked as helpful" debate again but since it's the only quick and convenient way to let a commenter know you've seen and read the comment, I do think doing so is a courtesy.

I try to remember a comment is ultimately more helpful to the person making it than the one receiving it. You "get something" from organizing your observations into a written form, whether or not the photographer ever reads it.

That said, I do try to mark all the comments I receive, but I never extremely rarely ever go back to see if the ones I make have been marked. I figure if the photographer really wants to respond to a comment they'll send a PM, as I do for those which are especially perceptive, "helpful", or just entertaining. I think a few "thank you notes" might encourage more commenting.

Great idea! Just look at what everyone claims to have learned from the comments in the Fine Art challenge.
Personally, I comment on average 10-20 percent on most challenges. If I enter, I figure it's part of the process - to look and see how others responded to the challenge - to give and take with the commenting!
To those who enter and don't view or vote or comment.. well,, IMO, 'tis a shame all the way around.

so that's a yes from me.

Agree. Commenting on every entry is doable but only once in a while.
10 comments per challenge is an achievable goal.

I checked to see the ones that weren't marked as helpful, 9 times out of 10, they were comments that were "critiques".
There are some instances where every other comment, except for mine, were marked as helpful.
Initially, I was upset about this... But then I realized that just because they didn't appreciate my comment, doesn't mean it wasn't helpful. Perhaps it was insightful to the photog, perhaps not... But it was MY vision, and it helped me to improve my own skills. Besides, we all have our own personal styles.
So even if our comments don't help the intended person, it helps us and perhaps, the audience.

And there have been times when I don't agree with someone's comment, but then I take the time to try and see their point of view, which is usually an eye opener and gives me the ability to see another perspective.

good point - possibly a martyrdom, possibly a missing the message, but carrying on nonetheless. clicking the button, snapping the snap.

I never really care if comments are checked as helpful or not, my intention when giving a comment is normally to give what my impression of the image is and I'm not all that concerned whether they agree or not. I do however try not be too harsh (I said try). Hopefully when making a comment it can provide a little insight on what someone not vested in the image sees or feels when they look at it for the first time. Usually for me if I stop to take the time to comment something has either hit me that I like or dislike enough to spend a few more minutes with it. It is funny how when you stop to critique how either way, good or bad, you take more time to study the image. As Denielle mentioned I think we also learn as we comment.
