Dear DPC colleagues.

For those in to stock for more time and experience that I am I have a question.

My stock sales have benn increasing, not as much as I would like to see, but I see some progress. I really hope that in the begining of next year it will pay for my new camera.

With the new D600/D800 cameras with high megapixel count a doubt is keeping me busy thinking: does file size, in megapixels count in stock?

I mean, i rarelly sell a xl photo (unless it is subscription) and as so does you that are in this sinse let us say 4MP or 6MP cameras do you see an improvement in sales with the more MP count images?

I know that this is hard to tell, becaause in some sites the new images will sell more than the old ones, but I would really like to know what is your feeeling around this subject.

I will not decide between the two cameras on this arguments, because build quality and dinamic range are form more important to me than MP count, altough an increase from my D700 12MP would be welcome.

Please post your thoughts around this subject.

Megapixels count a great deal on the output of a photo.
But you have to answer the question, what is the intended output first?

Megapixels means little when it comes to actual image capture.

As for Stock, no clue as I have no experience there.

If you are talking about microstock, I don't think it matters that much, since I believe most of the sites will upsample your image anyway, if they normally offer larger sizes than your submitted image. I don't think they disclose the original size, or which have been upsampled, or even what camera the picture's taken with.

That said, I don't think submitting larger images can hurt any, except for the impact on upload times and any potential bandwidth charges. Image quality (both technical and artistic) is much more important than image/file size.

Some do sell larger images for higher prices. But the really large sizes get less downloads (at least for me). But more and more agencies will require higher MP image. Generally I don't think so much about the size anymore after Alamy reduced the size requirements. As for the camera, if you have a prize range, then get the camera that is the best for you. There are other cafeterias much more important then MP. Same prize range will most likely give you also a very similar MP.

More MP can be useful because you can crop heavily and still have a saleable image.
