I was out in the Everglades the other evening, and after shooting some dusk/dark shots in the swamp, I headed back towards the city.. Just as I was towards the edge of nowhere, I drove up on this owl. I think I was quite lucky to get so close (probably also lucky the blasted thing didn't try to claw my eyes out).. I just pulled up with my headlights on him, and then when it would turn it's head away I would quickly and quietly move up a few steps and crouch again. Eventually I ended up about eight feet away laying on my side in the road taking pictures of this owl..

It finally jumped up and grabbed a mouse on the side of the road after about five or six minutes, which I couldn't see (it was really dark), but certainly heard. At which point I decided that I'd probably gotten the best I would get, so I left the owl to it's dinner, and went to find something for myself..

That is pretty cool. Probably lucky that was the only wildlife you ran into while lying on the road in Florida :)

Incredibly awesome!!!! What a fun experience. And what a great looking owl. Is that a barred owl?

I like the oddness of an owl sitting in the middle of the road, with twilight behind him. Nice shot Cory.
We had three juvenile owls roost in the eves of the house outside my wife's office for a week or two this summer, but my wife was so worried about disturbing them that I never got a good shot.
