Just joined up a few minutes ago. Have been reading some of the threads from other introductions. After the way you folks "cut up" on newbies I am a little nervous. :)
I call myself a "Professional Amateur" photographer; emphasis on amateur!
I have mainly focused on developing, and improving, my ability to transfer 8mm and 16mm film to DVD, or other mediums. I am becoming fairly busy doing this, but am now wanting to become more proficient in photography and deriving some income from doing so.
I am excited to having been directed to this site from a member of another photography group on facebook. It appears there is a lot of information here to help me do just what I am wanting too.
I plan to jump into the challenges, and other areas, once I read the guidelines posted here to help me in this.
Now, you can use whatever material you can in this intro to "cut" me to pieces, which seems to be a part of your initiation! (Just kidding about the initiation part!)

Scott Wright
PS; Will post self portrait soon

Welcome aboard. Glad that you are taking the time to look through the site and learn the rules and things before you jump into a challenge. Ya got some sense in ya, don't ya? ;)

Enjoy your stay here at the DPC hotel. But remember, we don't make your bed every night so ya best keep it spic and span!

Well, colloquially, it's the shark tank - but I personally enjoy the water. :)

Nah, we wait until you enter your first challenge for that sort of abuse. :) (no, seriously.)

...

Really, welcome to DPChallenge!

It's honestly a great place to learn and grow, no matter what your skill level is. Reading old threads is absolutely a great way to go, there's more knowledge here than anyone can ever really absorb! Be sure to check out the tutorials as well, as there is some gold there too.

If you're interested in ribboning, then you should know that the mantra is actually pretty simple: Attractive images score well, especially ones that fit the challenge, noise is despised (usually, but there are exceptions), and you need to have crisp details without oversharpening the image. Color balance is important, but nowhere near as important as what Ansel Adams called the "Zone System", essentially it's important that your image have good bright highlights, and nice rich blacks, but not too much of either one (again, there are exceptions here too)..

If you're not interested in ribboning, but want to explore alternative photography, the posthumous crowd will guide you on that journey.

Voting is an excellent way to sharpen your eye, and commenting on the images is always useful too, tell the submitter what you see when you look at the picture. Over time, you'll find that you see more and more, and that your understanding will grow along with your skills.

If you ever need help the forums are a great place to find it, there's a pretty good sized group of knowledgeable folks who waste their time in the forums - much to the benefit of the site and community.

Oh, and watch out for that guy Venser, he's a total instigator. ;)

Welcome Scott.
My only advice is to enter lots of challenges. Take your lumps and learn from them. Just try to improve your average score with each challenge. Or you could just be another prodigy like gyaban.

I may have found a good home here, except for having to make my own bed. The bed I make here I may not want to sleep in!
Cory, I have no idea what ribboning is, but I am sure to find out soon.
As far as the challenges and your comments, I can usually give back a larger serving than the first person!
I have a small portfolio of photo's I am brave enough to show in public. But I guess i will have many more that
I will enter into challenges that will may really cause me some shame, but it all in the family; right!

Thanks for the welcome,
Scott

Ribboning is placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any challenge. You'll get a HM star for any 4th or 5th place finishes.

If you need help with the macro stuff you're working on, I'm a pretty good resource, and would welcome any questions you have.

As far as being brave? Here, let me show you how far DPC has taken me.

Three of my earliest entries, all of which make me a little sick now. :)

<-- There aren't even words for this tragedy.

<-- Bad processing 101

<-- My first entry, and a great demonstration of how bad I was at macro.

(skip 3 years ahead)

<-- My most recent ribbon winner

<-- Very tricky subject to light well, but a fun macro

<-- Another recent macro

.............

Speaking of years and such things -- Check your camera date, check it now, and make certain it is always correct. Don't move your files with software, and don't rotate with the windows viewer. Any action that can change the EXIF data or re-write the file is grounds for a disqualification in challenges (DQ).. So just copy / paste the files with Windows Explorer, and save yourself the headache... (actually, you should be shooting in RAW, which are not only better files to work with, but are also harder to screw up the EXIF data on)..

And as for it all being 'in the family', you can absolutely bet on that..

Welcome aboard, Scott - but be warned: nearly 8 years ago I found this site and thought "I think I'll spend a little time here" and it wasn't long before I understood that there's no such thing as "a little" heroin. Enjoy.

Yes welcome Scott. I Googled "Photo Competitions" after going D-SLR in mid 2009 (after an eternity of 35mm photography) and ended up here. Virtual ribbons are just that, virtual. It's nice to ribbon make no mistake but comments are what make it more valuable. Don't forget to VOTE in every competition you enter (even those you didn't) and make comments as much as you can. What I have learned and am still learning from folks here about Post Processing with REAL results is near priceless. One thing is that Political Correctness on either side of the pond(s) USA, UK, Africa, Europe, Australia varies immensely. Have a thick skin and have fun. Good Luck.

Welcome, Scott. This is truly a great place. I learn something new here all the time. Great feedback from the crew.

I'm interested in how you get your 8mm and 16mm to dvd. I'll probably PM you about this one of these days if that's OK.

this place isn't any harder on newbies than it is on the regulars.

nobody here takes a perfect picture, someone for some reason wont like it, so as long as you dont take it personal you will be fine. the main goal is to do the type of photography you like and realize the score wont be indicative of how good your work is, it merely a reflection of the mass appeal here.

there are three types of photographers here, those who try to gain mass acceptance, those who dont bother with acceptance and do what they enjoy and those that are able to transcend and achieve both.
