Hello All!
It's been a while since I've been on DPC, a lot has been going on.

I have recently made the move from Jacksonville, Florida to the Denver, Colorado area.

Thankfully my work has approved my transfer to move to Colorado, so I am currently employed. However, my wife (unemployeed student) and I are looking to take our photography a bit more serious now that we are out in Colorado.

My questions are:
Should we get a business license if we are wanting to really take a shot at photography as an actual source of income?
If a Business License isn't suggested, is there anything we should do before we start promoting ourselves, and looking for 'gigs'?
If a business license isn't necessary, what would be the perks of having one vs not having one?

Any other suggestions for actually running/starting a photography business?

Our website can be located here: //www.TheBaumPhotos.com

We still have a few more updates we need to make to the site, but that is basically it. We might be adding a testomonials page, and getting some feedback from our previous clients for that. We also plan on getting new pictures of 'us' for the about me and other pages.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your local municipality will most likely require a business license. Check with your city hall. In Estes Park, we pay $200 per yr. for our business license.

More importantly, you will definitely need a Colorado Sales Tax License.

The percentage of sales tax depends on the location of the transaction. Most of the time you will need to collect for State, County and City sales taxes. If you ship out of state or sell for resale, there is no Colorado sales tax.

I also recommend registering your business with the Secretary of State. Also, if you have a DBA, then be sure to register your tradename.

Thanks hahn23! We just moved to Thornton, so we will try to check with the city hall sometime this week, hopefully after we do our Driver's licenses and Tag for the car.

We do appreciate the help Hahn, as some of your photography waswhat inspired us to actually visit Colorado in the first place. Once we came here, we just fell in love with the nature, people, atmosphere etc...

Maybe we will see you around the mountains some time :-)
