I received a PM on Flickr from the editor of FlightGlobal for my permission to publish this (and could I send him the High Res Version)

No offer of reward or "please quote me your fee." or we will give you a photo credit. Just a request to publish. Not where, front page, back page, in the middle, for how long, once of of repeat use etc. Also not which one of their many publications either and no idea of the print run. Their advertising rates are pretty high so I reckon they can afford to pay a decent rate.

I think I should send him a reply as a courtesy but how? I'd like to be paid for my work and am very anti just being happy for the sake of being "published" and get remunerated. I shoot these image to be paid for them!

Any advice, pricing, form letter, would be most welcome. I have rates but they are for Africa. Thanks.

I've had a couple of similar requests. If it is for printing in a for-profit publication, I ask for them to pay me what they feel is the fair value for use of the image. I am currently waiting to hear the final word (or a check) from a publisher that wants to use a photo of mine in a textbook. I also got a request for the use of some of my photos in a book about cycling in Texas. They were referred to me by a cycling acquaintance who has seen what I've done. They offered me $25 per photo used or free copies of the book. I've also had a few of those inquiries where it seemed they were going to pay me for the photos to use and then must have decided not to after all, because I never heard back after initial agreements.

that outfit is a fee-based website; i can't tell how much they charge or get an idea of how big their subscriber base is, but they cover a wide range of highly technical stuff. and they have a really deep site. they didn't put that together overnight and it wasn't built by someone's next door neighbor's nephew. they have spent some time and money, putting that thing together...

given that, i wouldn't give them anything without compensation. as to how much, i'd use a standard stock calculator, after getting their usage parameters and their budget. if they can't provide either, i politely decline.
