Hi all, this is my first entry and I am hanging around the 4.7 range. What range did everybody score on there first picture? And should I be happy with a finish of 4.7 for my first entry. I don't think I am very happy with results so far. I was waiting on entering a contest till I was happy with a picture and didn't want to enter a contest just to enter one.

I got 4.119 for my first entry.
I don't know if you should be happy about your entry - I think it would depend on a lot of factors like your idea, how you executed it and the competition.

welcome to your first entry, a 4.7 is about average for most. However a few new commers to DPC have scored in the top 10 right off the bat. but they were also doing this for a while at other sites as well.

It takes a few tries to find out what the "voters" like here, once you figure that out your scores will improve.

I think I got a 5.8 on the my first entry but it was in the landscape challenge where it's hard to go wrong and it was also back when there were less picky voters. Yuo have to remember that DPC for a lot of people is a place to learn. 4.7 means you have room for improvement and hopefully through entering challenges you will find out ways to improve. When you finally hit a 6 or a 7 after a bunch of challenges you can feel a great sense of satisfaction, at least I did.

You also have to realise that your DPC score does not necessarily mean your image is bad or good, it just means that the image was either something the masses of DPC found likable or not. After a few challenges you'll realise it's not just entering the best image you have but the image you think will score the best. That is if you're interested in score otherwise just enter what you like and take the feedback that's most helpful to you.

Good luck with your challenges!

It seems to me that most photos end between 4 and 6 somewhere. But really, I think the final percentile is the more important stat. The score doesn't always mean a lot because some challenges have higher or lower averages than others. As a newcomer to the site (and photography) myself, I'm mostly just hoping to get in at least the best 35-50% on my submissions.

I got 6.3 on my first, but haven't matched it since. :-(
Still early days for me though.

Mine was 4.8, my second worst score ever, and one of only two 4 scores I've ever got (the other being in my 3rd challenge). You learn very quickly on this site :)

I received a 4.18 for my first entry, which was also my 2nd worst score ever (4.12 I think on my fifth challenge or so). I've learned a lot in the relatively short time I've been participating, but sometimes it doesn't show in every challenge score. I'm all over the map with scores for the 40 challenges I've entered (including neon). I just like the "chase" so to speak, and I'm learning to look at things from new perspectives. That's what it's all about. :o)

Hello there! I only discovered this superb site on 4th Aug, I have never entered any competition in my life, and submitted my first entry last week for which I have got a score of 4.590, placing 195 / 246. This may discourage a lot of people but I am really looking forward to participating and learning from my peers. I am just returning to photography with a very limiting compact digital and eager to get my hands on a D70. I have no right to be amongst such a high standard but hopefully I will improve as I continue to participate. The message is: stick with it!

My first entry: average 4.985 which gave me 146th place out of 227, so 36%. The next two entries were significant improvements. My last entry (Botany) is not doing well...;-(

I don't learn so quickly on this site... I have two 3 photos, and 15 photos in the 4s. However, I don't enter photos to get high scores, and am not one of the many people here that don't enter a challenge just to keep the average score high.
However, I would like to vent here as I was away last week on the following picture, which got 4.79

As far as I'm concerned, most voters were too lazy to see that this photo fitted the challenge. Do the disbelievers really know of any flowers that are this big next to a guitar?

Anyway, I have that out of my system now!

I was a bit surprised about this one myself. I gave you an 8.
